Hiya people,
My sprint exec has been lying in the garage for around 9 - 10 months.
I've been running it for about three weeks, albeit a bit rough till I got some air in the tyres lol. I had to buy some adapter from the local jap dealer, becuase those garage air pumps just won't fit, I am sure they fit the valve, it's that they're not flexible enough to get right in there.
Now then, yesterday the bike cut out on me in slow traffic, big bummer when you're at a busy junction. I thought I'd go and pop some fuel in, so that's what I did. I got home ok without any problems. I took it out that evening and it just kept cutting out, like it was being starved of fuel.
Tonight, I took it for a bit of a burn and I got the same thing even at speed. Happily doing high speed when the same thing happened, judder cough the bike stops.
It takes a bit of starting once this has happened, the only thing that seems to make it strat again is twisting the fuel selector from on to res and prime - back and forth. It doesn't cut out when I ride with it in the prime position. I am not sure this is bad for the bike, as it's just supplying more fuel right?
Engine sounds fine, untill it begins to cut out you get that I am running outta juice sound lol.
One more small thing:
Frount tyre left hand side as you sit on the bike, there's the bar that goes through the wheel holding wheel to bike. Is there supposed to be a retaining clip there?
Triumph dealer doesn't seem to think it's carbs, he says it would sound like the bike was about to explode. His advice is to go for some blasts and hopefully whatever it is causing the problem will sort it's self out. He did say that it could be dirt in the fuel filter though.
My feelings are that it's the fuel tap, any thoughts??

Cheers and sorry it's been a long time since I was on here
:hammer:

Bad gas and junk in the tank, pick one.

Did you put any stabil in the tank when you put it away?

I'd drain the tank and the bowls on the carbs and
either run some seafoam thru it to clean it or
take verything off and clean it.

Junk in the carbs is just going to continue to make more headaches.

Only thing in the tank at the time was Gas, or as we brits call it petrol.
Thanks, I am gonna run it tomorrow for work and shall be draining the fuel tank upon my return. I normally enjoy beers on Friday nights.
I guess I'll have to take off the plastic bits before I actually get to see anything.
Once drained, would you recomend I add anything to the new fuel??

If it runs with the petcock in the prime position then there is probably a lack of vacuum to the petcock. The valve is held open with engine vacuum in the on position. The prime position holds it open mechanically. There is a vacuum line from the carbs to the petcock. Check that it is still connected and not pinched. If that is ok then consider a rebuild kit for the petcock as it probably needs a new diaphram. Good luck!

Mine did the same thing after my winter maintenance. As it turned out, the Mikuni built vacuum petcock (aka fuel selector) was inoperative. After an easy $95 for a new one, it runs fine.

If you buy a new petcock, you get a new intank fuel filter (value added).

If it runs fine on prime but not main/reserve then, like Sailfish say, it is the vacuum line. This is the small pipe running from the back of the tap onto the top of one of the carbs. If it is kinked/split/pinched it then it wont open the petrol top; viola loss of petrol.

Sounds like you should speak to a different dealer.

Re. wheel 'bar'; this sounds like the wheel bush. This is a hollow bush which clamps between the inner race of the bearing and the l/h fork. It just keeps the wheel in the right place and is fully restrained so; no, it doesnt need a clip.

ooooh,
Well I got told I could go home early today, I asked if I should bother turning up on Monday, lukily for me the answer was yes.
I managed to get the side panels off ok. Why do they go and put a couple of bolts where you can't really reach on the side panels near the back, making me take the thing off in one piece .
I had a look at the back of the fuel selector, it was a bit of a tight squeeze to be honest. It seemed that a wiring loom had been trapping the vacuum hose, perhaps for some time, there was also a split on the top of the vacuum hose as it joins the fuel valve.
I guess my next step is to either cut the hose where it has split and refit, and if there's not enough play, buy a new one.
I may just re-route the vacuum hose so that it doesn't get pinched by that wiring loom again.
Obviously if this does not fix the problem, I'll go deeper.
I'll be sure to keep you posted.....

Many Thanks

haha, went up to the triumph dealer to see about a new hose. My other half didn't like the idea of just cutting the bad bit off etc.
It's around £5 for a new vacuum hose from Triumph lol.
We came straight back home where I mde my lady change the hose, my big stubby pinkies were not made for the job lol.
Will ofcourse let you know how it goes

Fixed my problem (infamous T3 fuel starvation) today. The vacuum hose was indeed kinked and cracked. I clipped off the offending part and re-routed it in front of the big round part instead of around it. Also had a kink in one of the fuel hoses. I clipped it and attached a somewhat smaller hose at the fuel-tap and then to the hose. No more kink. I also removed the little noise baffles inside the airbox tubes. It fixed the problem 100%. I just put on D&Ds and will be adding a K&N filter plus Dynajet kit asap. Should run like a bat out of hell once finished.

I add my name to the list of those who have experienced this symptom of fuel starvation. And eventually cured it by re-routing the vacuum pipe. You don"t even need to spend £5 at a Triumph dealer, you can buy plastic pipe of all varieties from B&Q or similar for a quid a meter or thereabouts. I bought more than I needed, it comes in handy for replacement battery overflow pipes etc. Not that I now need such things, having treated my D900 to an Absorbed Gas Mat battery.
