I have a 95 Sprint with 36,000 on the clock. For the last couple of days it's made a grating noise and has been very hit or miss on starting. Today it wouldn't start at all, just kept grating. I had to fit a new battery a few months ago. I have checked my engine against the Haynes manual and it would appear that I have one of the early models with an access plate above the starter sprag. My questions are; is it the starter sprag which is the problem? Is there a kit available from Triumph? Is it worth upgrading the alternator bolt while it's stripped down? I intend to do this repair work myself, can it be done in a day? Any advice anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

if it has a flat plate bolted on the top of the gearbox (under the carbs) tou can replace the sprag - as it sounds like it has indeed failed - through this cover. you also need to remove the seat, tank, airbox, carbs, clutch cover and clutch.

you can do it in a day if you have everything to hand.
You will need to take the old sprag with you when you go to the dealers as apparently there is two sizes-depends upon no. of teeth-the new one may be slightly larger diameter than the old one, in which case you may have to machine the inside of the engine case-the dealer should have a special tool to do this job and may be willing to lend it to you for a small deposit.
don't forget clutch cover gasket and an o ring for the alternator.
If you have the Haynes manual try yo make the clutch holding tool-makes it much easier to remove and replace the clutch center nut.
you might as well replace the alternator drive shaft for peace of mind as the old one has to come out anyway. i think my local quoted me something in the region of £70.00
for this bit the sprag was if memory serves about £140.00
any queries feel free to pm me. good luck

Eddie, thanks for the info mate, much appreciated. I have plenty of tools and garage space to work in, just have to find the time. I'm off on my annual family two week holiday this week so it'll have to wait till I get back. If I get stuck I'll give you a shout for any tips if you don't mind.
Andy.
:-D
