winter storage

it's a real pain in the $#@ to pull the tank and disconnect the fuel lines to squirt some oil in the spark plug holes for the nice easy on the rings and walls first spring start up.... so i was thinking, my old iron head sportster manual said to empty gas tank and add one quart of gas and a few ozs of oil, then run the bike till it smokes and stalls. then at that point i would drain the carb bowls and refill the tank and treat with stabil. any thoughts, or maybe i am over the top?

Doesn't sound like a bad plan. There's better stuff than Stabil, like Seafoam, but Stabil works for storage. You could also probably get away with running it 'til it smokes; no need to wait for the stall.

Cheers,

FWIW, for the last 11 years, I just top off the tank after the last ride of the season. Then put it on a battery tender. Every 2-3 weeks I unplug the tender, open the garage door & run the bike for around 10 minutes or so followed by shut down & back on the tender. But lately I've been adding startron to the crap fuel containing ethenol which with we have to deal.

It has worked for me in climates of Houston, Santa Barbara & Washington State...so maybe you are over thinking it a bit.

I just ride mine daily. Admittedly, that's working better for me in Austin than it did in New York.

Cheers,
