I have '98 Trident, over the years have had various issues in regards to its general operation. I have seen some of the problems discussed in other messages posted here and I have already tried them to no avail.
When it first started, I limped it back from Daytona to Tampa and had the coils (all 3) replaced when the dealer's diagnostic said they were bad. It ran better, but still not right. They couldn't find anything. I later found a kink in a hose, and it improved some. Following year at again at Daytona engine died at idle, would not restart until I turned the ignition all the way off and back on. Then it fired right back up. From that point, I then had to make sure that RPM did not drop below 1500 or 2000 without it dying and needing to repeat the off/on ritual again.
Dealer said they couldn't find a problem, even though it ran very rough. Diagnosis of possibly bad fuel, the coils and carbs were fine. Got new gas, no change. Tried additive, still bad. Finally I took it to a non-dealer to have the carbs looked at (I had been fiddling with them) and just check it out. They worked on the carbs for about an hour, proclaimed them healthy. They were having difficulty starting the thing though. Said that they found the wiring harness behind the headlight area appeared to have been crimped or crushed.
I seem to remember that there was a recall or service bulletin for this sort of thing on the Sprint - can anyone assist?
