Hi, I have just joined and wondered if somebody could help me with the power output of Trident-Sprint 900 engines. I am interested in the cut-over years for the models (UK).

Some background. I have a '95 Thunderbird and really enjoy the torque the engine has. It is just an idea, but I am wondering about a second bike. Started looking at info on the Speed Triple, which has great torque (I'm not interested in top of the band pulling power) and now I am realistically thinking about a late Trident/Sprint Sport/Executive, of which I know the later years had the same engine and torque characteristics. How early does this spec engine go back to on the Trident/Sprint range?

I guess my ideal would be a Sprint Sport with the Executive handlebars, but I have always liked the look of the earlier/naked Trident too, which may be more affordable.

Thanks for any info. Geoff

All the information I have (workshop manuals, handbook, magazine articles etc) suggests that from the very first 900 Tridents(91-2) to the final 98 Sprint Sports and Executives, the power output remained the same.
The figures I have are 98PS(97BHP)@9000RPM,
The torque figures are 83Nm(61LB/FT)@6500RPM
These figures do seem to vary a little bit depending on where you read them, however, but you can't always believe power/torque figures anyway.
As the owner of a 1993 Sprint, I can vouch for the fact that it has more than enough low end torque and top end power for any sane person on British roads. My only real complaint with my bike is that it is a heavy bike, with the weight carried high up, which makes it a handful when manhandling it out of the drive, and when doing u-turns etc.(once moving at more than a couple of MPH, it's fine) Try this website for specs. http://www.triumphsantacruz.com/models/1998/

The Sprint Sport/Executive/Trident/Trophy, all carry the same engine (Major torque down low and will run at 80mph all day long). They all have weak fork springs that you should have changed out for the correct tension. The major differences are obviously the body work. However, there are some not so obvious differences you should be aware of.

Suspension:

Sprint Sport - 43mm fully adjustable forks (same as Daytona/Speed 3)

Trident/Trophy/Executive - 43mm non adjustable forks.

Brakes:

Sport/Executive/Trophy - 310 mm full floating discs with 4 pot calipers (same as Daytona/Speed 3)

Trident - 296mm solid mount discs with 2 pot calipers (only model to have them other than classic range)

Rear Wheel/Tire:

Executive/Sport/Trophy - 17 inch to accomodate better choices.

Trident - 18 inch which limits selection (for the life of me why 18 inches?)

If you choose the Trident (I did) you should plan on changing the brakes out for the 310mm/4 pot variety.

Those are some of the differences, hopes this helps.

Why not upgrade your Tbird engine to Sprint spec? The sprint cams will drop right in, and the sprint igniter will give you a higher redline.

You can even drop in the 955 pistons and liners..

Thanks for all the information, I had not realised that all the 900cc engines (except Tiger & T-Bird/Legend/Adven. & Daytona Super-3) were the same spec.

The Service Manual does mention an 85ps version of the 900cc engine, as well as the 98ps. Was this only for low octane fuel countries (I'm guessing), does anybody know?

Realising the Speed-3 had a great engine, and seeing Jack Liley advertising the Speed-3 cams & box for the T-Bird, I then got to thinking about the later Sprint Sport/Executive as a possible option as this had the same engine. I did not realise the whole 900cc range had the same spec...

The other information is great too (brakes & forks). Thanks.

One other thought is the engine colour/color change from Alloy Silver to Black - am I right in thinking this happened on the Trident 93-94, and the Sprint has always been black? (** I have just seen a picture of a '95 Sprint, with an Alloy/Silver engine - perhaps both were available and coded to the Bodywork Paint colour/color? **)

Thanks, Geoff

Geoff

The original 91-92 Tridents had a silver painted engine, changed to black in 93.The first Sprints (93) had a gunmetal (dark silver) engine, as did the Trophy.I'm not sure exactly when the Sprint's engine became black, but the Sprint Sport and Executive had black engines.
