I have had my sprint for a few years, it runs good and i've put on a lot of aftermarket stuff, but i've never had the carbs rebuilt/tuned.

Anyone experienced this service? opinions? costs?

Well I had mine between 24k & 32k miles. I stripped the carbs (Keihin) twice to (eventually) find a small spilt in one diaphragm.

Other than the slit they showed very little wear, no leaks & synchronised on vacuum guage very precisely. IMHO there were no signs of needing a carb service. WHy do you think yours does?

The bike always runs well when hot, but I always have to put the choke on to start from cold. I also pop a bit when cold(aftermarket pipes). I also rode a newer sprint 900 and it seemed to run much smoother than mine.

Anyone know the aproximate cost to have the shop do it?

If the one you road was a 99 plus, it probably was smoother because of the fuel injection. Those engines really are nice.

My 900 Daytona (carb) is also cold natured but it has never failed to start. It does take some choke when cold. The fuel injected bikes will start better when cold.

Your carbs sound okay apart from the roughness

IMHO it should always require some choke from cold, that what the choke is for. Also most aftermarket pipes cause leaning out of the carburettion so unless your has been rejetted I would expect some popping on the overrun.

Have you got the standard pipes? if so does it run better with them? Did the previous owner re-jet it?
If you can't find that out you may need to strip the carbs to check which slides & jets are in there.

As regards roughness, it may need the carbs synchronisng (although they seldom go out of balance). If do you need to do that, service the airfilter, plugs & valve clearances first as they will all upset the amount of suction being applied leading to false readiings on the synchonising.

Good luck Jon.
