seems here is a big difference in MPG between keihins and mikunis ; how about as many responses as possible noting MPG and which carbs you have?
thanks.
I had a '96 thunderbird that got 30 MPG and a '95 daytona 900 that never topped 35MPG (US) both Mikunis!

Yup -- Keihins seem to consistently get much better fuel economy. Seem to carburet a bit smoother too, but don't have the same throttle response as well tuned mikunis.

The mpg difference gets worse over time since the Keihins seem to hold their tune better (Mikunis eventually are plagued by worn needles).

It appears that when comparing faired models versus naked (Daytona/Sprint vs. Trident/Tbird) bikes, when both are equipped with Mikunis, the faired models do slightly better, getting 35-40mpg against 30-35.
Is this purely aerodynamic, or is there a difference in gearing?

I noticed, Bass, that you wisely included "US" after your mpg figure, and am wondering if our cousins across the pond (and down-under) are using the US or the British imperial gallon in their figuring. A US gallon is 231 cubic inches and an imperial gallon is 277.5 cubic inches.
We should be sure that we are all using equal units of measure while making comparisons.

My '01 Trophy 900 pulls down mid-40s (US) no matter what I do with it.

The Keihins replaced Mikunis in '99 on the Trophy, and on the Yahoo Trophy list it's been noted that the later bikes consistently get better gas mileage. We do have one fellow who insisted that his 1200 got 50 mpg. He later conceded that he had to go 55 mph for an entire tank to do it. I don't know about any of you guys, but doing 55 mph on one of these bikes is excruciating. It wants to GO!

If I don't go too far over 5000 RPM when cruising I can get about 42 MPG. But I NEVER cruise that slow, usually between 5500-6000 RPM (85-90 MPH) and that gets me 38.5 MPG.

I'm running Keihins on my '98 Sprint 900.

On my 95 Sprint with Mikunis I average 33-34 mpg (US). The best I have done is 38. It still does about three times better than my F250.

Stock Mikunis on my 95 Sprint give 55 UK when touring at around 5000rpm. My pals 91 Trophy always does 10% better than the Sprint. It too is on Mikunis that have never been touched.

Both bikes are 1 tooth bigger on the gearbox sprocket and have around 50k miles on the.

The Trophy feels slightly lean and gets a little hot and bothered in summer but we've never got round to putting it right
