Hi All,
Can anyone help with this problem on my '95 SpIII?
It has a very poor blip response, ie when I open the throttle from idle there's a delay before the revs build. It's almost like it's taking a breath before revving.
It's done 55k miles and it's had this 'feature' since I bought it which was at 49k miles. I've just replaced the air filter with a K&N, cleaned out the carb float bowls and fitted new spark plugs. All three old spark plugs were the same colour and had identical, slightly rich, deposits which I attribute to the old air filter being somewhat overdue for replacement.
I have visually checked the synchronisation of the carb butterflies, checked the return response of the slides and examined all the manifold and air box rubbers. All were ok. The carbs are Mikuni. In all other respects the performance seems normal.
Any further suggestions for solving this riddle would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Steve, Nottingham UK.

Same thing happened to my 900. Chased the problem, off and on, for almost a year, checked EVERYTHING. Does yours have a slight stumble at low throttle openings?, and maybe an "iffy" idle at times? I also have a high mileage machine.
The problem was weak coils. I replaced mine last week and the bike runs and idles perfect.

Hi J98Sprint,
The symptoms are exactly as you describe. Thanks for the tip. I will try the coils from my TBS which is 4 years and 20k miles younger and report back what I discover.
The air filer change was worthwhile anyway though, I now get 170 miles before the fuel light comes on whereas I was only getting 130 before.
Regards, Speedtrifle.

Are you serious? Mines due for a change, and I have a K&N sitting in the garage. Should be interesting to see if my mileage improves.

ezride,
I am serious. By the look of the filter I took out I reckon it had never been changed. It was very clogged with oil and dirt and the foam was collapsing.
The service history is only stamped up to 15,000 miles so it probably missed being changed at 24,000 and it's done another 31,000 since then. I imagine there are a few deposits in the combustion chambers and on the valves since it's been running rich for quite a while, still, it gives me a good excuse to give some wellie for a bit to clear it out.
Regards, Speedtrifle. :-D

Check also for wear of the needles - this was an issue - which will lead to a rich spot!

Another thing is the synchronization of these triples is quite fussy. When I did this to my Trident the gauges (Davida) only showed a tiny error but correcting it made a world of difference to the performance. My Speed Triple had a horrible flat spot as you opened the throttle but reinstating the original exhaust has dramatically reduced this. I am replacing the air cleaner with a new OEM one and I will be balancing the carbs with a mercury gauge set. I am pretty confident that this will smooth her out totally. If the coils don't cure your problem I would seriously suggest having the carbs balanced or buying a set of gauges.
Hope this helps
Nic :chug:
