Loud valve tap ... serious?

my son rides my '95 sprint when he's home from college, so i don't get to ride it much. now that he's back at school i took it for a ride and was dismayed by a very loud, pronounced valve tap that was apparent even above the supertrapp exhaust. the tap might have been there for as long as 200 miles.

will adjustment cure it or might i have some damage that requires more extensive repair?

My guess would be no damage. New shims, correct clearances, quite motor.
