Lowering a 1998 Sprint

I have the need to lower my 98 Sprint Executive. I am 5'9" and I can reach the ground but would love to have a little more contact. I've seen the posts about adjusting the eccentrics, adjusting the tension of shock, and reversing the bracket. Could someone tell me the best way to drop the bike without decreasing performance or causing long term issues to other parts. I assume however much I drop the back i will need to drop the front in order to maintain the handling. Thanks in advance.

Kevin,
Yes you are correct, you can lower the ride height by rotating the eccentrics. I made this modification to a friend's Trident with no problems but there are a few things you need to know.

1. There is a tab on the outside of the caliper carrier which prevents the axle from being rotated 180°. It bumps into the swing arm. You must remove this tab (I did it with a hack saw then filed it flat and painted it) then the axle will rotate allowing the wheel to rise to the lower position (hope this makes sense). You'll have to remove the rear wheel and disassemble the carrier from the torque arm to make this mod.

2. Performing step one will cause the chain to rub against the chain guard. I installed a longer bolt with double lock nuts to raise the rear of the guard. If your bike has a hugger built into the chain guard like mine then it'll be a bit more work.

3. The side stand will now be too long. This is something you may be able to live with but you will have to be careful where you park as it will be easier to tip over. We ended up bending his side stand to accommodate the lowering.

4. You'll need to slide the forks up through the triple clamps at least 3/4" of an inch to level the front with the back.

5. It will be much more difficult to hoist the bike on it's centerstand as a result of this mod. To help with this I placed a 1x6 board on the ground behind the rear wheel and roll the back tire up on to it then lift the bike on the centerstand.

The rear shock is unaffected by these changes. Ground clearance may become an issue as the centerstand will drag sooner than before but that's about it. My friend's been riding his Trident with this setup for 8 years with no issues. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi,

A number of riders have fitted a Hagon Type L Monoshock (seat lowering shock) as a first step. This may be the only thing you need to do? However, again, I think it may be advisable to drop the front forks slightly to restore the sharpness of the steering.

That would be much easier but not as cheap... and I'm cheap!
