Valve clearance/shims
When checking my valve clearance on my 95 Speed Triple I came across one inlet valve with zero gap. When I removed the camshafts to access the shims it was found that the smallest shim - 2.00mm was already fitted. Now I reckon I'll need a 1.85-1.90 to get the required gap and according to my local Triumph dealer the smallest shim available is 2.00mm.I know that shims from some Yamahas fit but I still can only get 2.00mm ones.Anybody came across this before.By the way the bike ran okay with the tight valve!

Sounds like that particular valve has become "pocketed", and is sitting higher in the head. Only solution is to remove the head and have the seat re-cut.

what was the gaps on the other valves like? for some reason it seems like it,s allways the inlet that is the tightest i would thought it would have been the other way round being the exhaust valves get hottest.
what sort of miles has it done? and was it running like?
the gaps on mine was closed up and the others were very tight but lukily they shimed down .

?????? shims should be available to sort that ??? 2.00mm is huge I'm using 1.65 etc..sounds like your dealer is talking pants
Remember you can get 25mm shims from Honda (early CB's) and Yamaha XJ/FJR
Cheers

Thanks MOT,glad to hear that it's not unusual to fit much thinner shims than 2mm.Got to agree with you on the dealer front,I've got a couple of small local bike shops nearby so I'll try them next week - Triumph dealer is 30 miles away.I'll spend my cash in the local community!Oh,great site MOT.

A machine shop can also grind a shim down for you. Just keep an original hardened side facing the cam.

My 1st thoughts are your valve/valves are FUBAR.
Yes you can shim it, but to go that far down (normal is 2.6-2.7) then the damage is done and a few months time you be back to square one.
Maybe she had a hard previous life living close to the red line. seen it all the time when racing t3's
Probably cheaper to find a 2nd hand head than buy new valves.

Umm...
Davie, I wonder if it wouldn't be worth having that shim ground down just to buy a little time while you search for a "new" head.
Cheers,
