885 Steamer Motor Numbers-Help!

I posted this her b/c the Sprint forum seemed to deal with later Sprints

A kindred spirit from MN broke down in KY last Oct. I traded him my 1998 Sprint Ex. for his 1994 r1100rs. We traded titles by mail. He just called me and was getting ready to go to the MN DMV when he discovered he couldn't make out the motor number. We both think that the numbers don't necessarily match the frames on these bikes.

I have a couple questions for you guys.

1. Is the motor number stamped on multiple places?

2. What is the sequence like on your motors, all #, # letter,# ? I'm not asking for your specific #'s just the format and the number of numbers.

P.S. Gus at Baxters told me about the 46773, 46637 #'s but i was guessing there were other numbers on the thing.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Thanks for the attitude, kywheels, we live to serve.

A Steamer is a Tiger, not a Sprint. You're lucky your post got to the right forum.

The motor number is stamped on the case and does not match the VIN. There is no easy way to recover the motor number after corrosion has made it illegible. Sanding the area down with a Dremel is probably the easiest way to bring it back, but obviously requires care, precision, and refinishing after.

Cheers,
-Kit
