Rear shock removal.

I suspect the shock on my 96 Sprint has had it as it bottoms out with a thump far too easily. I am either going to get it rebuilt for around £100 or buy a replacement for considerably more.
How much of a job is this? Do you need any special tools? Is getting a rebuild a good idea?

shock removal

Hi there

Removing the shock should take you a couple of hours at the most. I've just done it.

1 Panels off
2 Remove battery box
3 Support the bike underneath with a jack or stand - I also had the front on paddock stand because it made it more stable
4 Undo the bottom link shaft
5 Undo the top bolt
4&5 - I think that's the order

It's easier if you have a torque key that fits on a ratchet.
Replacing is easier if you have two people on the job. If not, still can do it on your own.

Sprint Manufacturing do a replacement shock, as does Jack Lilley. Maxton do a all-singing-or-dancing version.

I had my proflex unit revalved with new seals and nitrogen recharged for £70 inc delivery.

You might have a game getting the main suspension shaft out.It runs through the bottom mount of the suspension and also holds the two arms in place at the bottom. Mot's site highlights this as a problem, I got tired of beating the crap out of mine and took it to an engineering firm with a hyraulic press. Im not sure about the cost as mine was done as a foc as a favour as I know the guy but I doubt it would cost a lot if you got stuck [ no pun intended].
