Tight Valves

I have had a quick check Of all my valves on my 99 Sprint, And all seem to be a bit tight Inlet valves are all 003mm and Exhaust are between 004mm and 005mm.
So going to check again in the morning and the off to my Fav Honda spares shop to buy some shims, Ouch that will dent the plastic (dont tell the wife)

Did'nt think about moving them around, Thanks i will give that a go. The old bus starts and runs ok Mot. Apart fom the rattle. Alls tight under the valve cover lol. Had a probe around with my magnetic stick and did'nt find any bits in there so as for the rattle coming from there, Im still stumped. Exhausts off next to see if anything is loose in there. Cant see it though. So re shim/change plugs/carb balance and i will just use it.

Shims now replaced with nice new Honda 25mm shims (half the cost of Triumph)
Now running sweet, with her new plugs and carbs balanced.
Yes have still got the rattle. Have no idea where its coming from????
top end is now fine, Alternator is fine, headers tight, nothing loose that i can see. So i will just ride it and wait for it to go bang (hoping it wont)

Extra Motorcycle: You're kidding right?
Jim,

I had to dig about for this one. I posted this information back in 2004 back when I had my Bonneville. Its been my experience that if you go to a shop today, a lot of the guys there need part numbers to work with. If you ask them for a 25mm valve shim, you might just get a vacant stare. If you have the option, pick a shop to go to with the seasoned shop mechanic. He'll know what a 25mm shim is and wont need a part number. If you don't have a choice, the part numbers below will assist the unknowing parts grabber.

Denny,

Ill repost the info I put out a few weeks ago...

I am ok with the Torx bolts in the valve train. If you dont round out the heads taking them out (and you shouldnt if you go slow and use the right torx bit...T-30 I believe), they will go right back in just fine. As far as shims, that depends on your dealer. The diameter is 25mm, and the average thickness seems to be somewhere between 2.70 to say 3.10. If you are doing the valve shim replacement yourself, and your Triumph dealer doesnt have the shims in stock, check out a Honda dealer or a Yamaha dealer. The Bonnie shims are common across several bikes in both Honda and Yamaha. The shims "mike out" the exact same diameter as the originals and as I can attest, fit perfectly. Yamaha shims for the FJ1200/1100, tt/xt 350, seca II, venture, vmax and royalstar all fit and Honda shims for the CB 750/900/1000/1000/x fit.

These are the Honda part numbers I used when I did my valve adjustment.
14927-422-000 is for a 2.95 shim
14929-422-000 is for a 3.00 shim
14931-422-000 is for a 3.05 shim

If you need Yamaha numbers, these should work...
26h-12169-e0-00 is for a 2.95 shim
26h-12169-g0-00 is for a 3.00 shim
26h-12169-j0-00 is for a 3.05 shim
[snip]

Ride Safe
Dave

Oh, one last thing. When you go to get your shims, take a micrometer with you to verify the thickness. Some shims won't have a thickness stamped on them and they could be in the wrong bin. Might save you a trip back to the shop.

I just went into my local Honda spares shop and asked for CB750 f 1982 valve shims. Then told the chap what size i wanted. In my case 6x 2.70mm and 6x 2.65mm they were £6.05 each. He would'nt give me discount for my old ones. So ive listed them on ebay.
I found changing the shims quite easy. I took the cams out had the whole bike back together again in 3 hours.
