Removing the chain and engine out q's

Hi everyone,

Im about to take my engine out (if the rain ever stops) but i need to take the chain off. Does anyone have a preferred/easy method to remove the chain?

Also, does anyone have any insider advice or tips on taking the engine out that the Haynes doesnt include. Anything i should do while i have the chance?

Ive bought a new engine so i have a bike to ride while i slowly repair the old one (holed liners i fear)

For chain removal, I just undid the chain tensioners and rotated the adjustment cams, it gave me enough slack to lift the chain off the sprocket and move it out of the way.

I used a car jack under the sump (protected by a plank of wood), once I released all the bolts, i lowered it down gently onto blocks. It needs support not to fall forwards or to the side

Follow the Haynes, it'll be fine. I think I had to remove my gbox sprocket/nut - not sure if it was necessary, but I did it (and can't recall if this is said to do in HBOL), to get clearance to hoik the chain off. Daytona 1200 if it makes any odds.

As Mhyde suggested, if you slacken the chain adjuster off at the back wheel, [pull the chain outwards as you then rotate the wheel the chain will come off the back sprocket], the next step is drop the engine oil out into a clean container, take the sprocket cover off as per Mr Haynes and ease the chain past the engine sprocket til its wrapped snugly sgainst the swingarm, this should allow the engine to drop out once youve disconnected everything and unbolted.
Taking the engine sprocket off requires a bloody great 36mm socket and a lot of grunt apparently, Im about to do mine, Im tooled up for it but not looking forward to it.
I'm sure that Im not alone in admiring your determination to get your bike back on the road, good luck with it mate and keep on keeping on !

Thanks everyone. Managed to get it out in the end ok

I never un-done the swingarm bolts like it said in the manual because i never i had a big enough allen key or socket. It came out anyway, i hope the new one goes back in the same



My old one is a silver one, so the black might give it a more sleek look on the plus side.

Anyone wanting a new engine btw - i spotted a BRAND NEW one one ebay at £300 start. Surely a one-off this. I was thinking about abandoning the one ive bid on but i decided to bid and win as it was cheap enough and has got 21,000 on the clock. The rest of the bike looked in fab condition so im hoping this engine is going to give me a break

Similarly, is there any advice that will aid with installation of the engine? Any specific ways or methods that will make things easier.

I might have to make some adjustments to the carbs with the new lump, d'ya think?

Oh yeah - the sprocket nut was LOOSE! Literally two hand turns of the sprocket nut and it was off. Shocking Could have been nasty

Hook up the two front mounts first, then hoist it up the final bit at the back. Remember to hang the chain onto the front sprocket first, though; I forget and I had to rape it in place afterwards

Thanks Faffi, still waiting on my replacement to arrive..

What are the chances the carbs will work fine with the new engine? Should no adjustment have to be made apart from maybe some idle adjustment, or will the mixture need changing.

As you have gone to all the trouble of swapping the engine you might as well check the carbs are balanced.

Thanks mate, i will do. I have the kit so ill do that once its all up and running. I suppose the only thing i can do is hook it all up, start it and go from there. If it starts...
