swingarm shims question

Now heres a funny thing,,, I have had the swingarm out of my 96 Speed Triple for some in-depth maintenance seeing as Im too much of a whimp to actually ride the thing in the winter and for whatever reason there are only three shims under the four dust shields, the dust shield nearest the engine spkt didnt have a shim between it and the bearing, so does anyone know if there are always 4 shims fitted from the factory, or are they shimmed up individually, ie, is it possible that my bike only ever have a shim fitted swingarm shields 2,3 & 4 reading left to right?.
Any comments would be apreciated.

Let's see what Mr. Haynes says...

Hey Born (OK if I call you Born?)

According to my Haynes manual, there should be 2 shims per side for your swing arm pivot.

Left side (when sitting on the bike) is lined up as (starting from the outside or left to swingarm) spring clip, Pivot shaft which passes through (in order) dust cap, shim, needle bearing, inner sleeve, needle bearing, shim and dust cap.

Right side is lined up from the outside (right to swingarm) as spring clip, Pivot shaft bolt, washer, dust cap, shim, needle bearing, inner sleeve, needle bearing, shim, dust cap.

So it would seem you are missing a shim. Also, the manual states that it is important to keep the parts in the order in which they were removed. Judging from your missing shim, it's possible that someone already dismantled this part and wasn't too careful putting it back together so there may be wear problems among the parts.

Also, there is a note stating that there may not always be a spring clip installed but no mention is made regarding why or if it is specific to certain models.

Thanks Darth [ OK if I call you Darth ?as I'm an Andy too and it may get confusing !].
I thought so, some numb-nuts has taken it to bits, reassembled it and then asked themselves '' I wonder where this big washer goes, oh well ,its going in the bin now ''.
Not to worry, I'll get one on order, thats another job only half done to add to the list. Has anyone else noticed that you can rip these things to bits ok but you never get a clear run at putting it back together, theres always some little item youre left waiting for. There, I feel better for a good moan.
Thanks for your help Darth , I think that youre quite right as Bike Bandit's schematic drg shows four and Haynes doesnt mention differing quantities.

Yup 4 is the number.....it is a little tight to get back in so perhaps previous owner took the (wrong) easy route !!!??

Do you know, Mot, , now I come to think of it I was pleasantly suprised at how easy it was to remove and now I know why. In fact its all been easy apart from the *"##*#* ! suspension arm pivot pins, which as has been noted already, can be a trifle recalcitrant to say the least..

Yup mad isn't it...the suspension linkage has 5 grease nipples on it...and still folk ignore the maintenance ????

I found the fitting of the swing arm not a total pig but took a bit of jiggling as the seals/shims tended to slide off centre as the swing arm was muscled back in..mind you that was when I had replaced the seals for new..the Sprint I just took off inspected and went back in fairly easy..

Anyroad good luck with it...should deffo be better with less play in the swing arm area !!!!

Cheers Mot, plan A is to get the #######g bushes/ brgs on the suspension lever arms & pivot pressed out at work on the hydraulic press, rubbed over with fine wet and dry and new needle rollers throughout.
Plan B is take up stamp collecting instead.

Exactly , Mot, the first thing I did when I bought the Speedy was buy a grease gun and lube em, cost me £ 5 ish for the grease and £ 5 ish for the gun, took me all on 10 minutes to do and yes, I do realise that Im ranting now but I cant help myself !
Triumph dont help by stating that they need lubing every 24,000 miles or 3 years which seems somewhat relaxed to say the least.

OK, I may be missing something here or there may have been a change of which I am unaware, but according to Haynes, the Trident, Sprint, Trophy, Speed Triple and Daytona do not have grease nipples. The swingarm has to be removed in order to grease the bearings. So Born...is it possible a previous owner installed the nipples on yours after the fact?

Hi,
My 95 Daytona has the 5 grease nipples that Mot mentioned.The Triumph service manual also shows the grease nipples.
