Lifting a Super III

I recently acquired a motorcycle/ATV lift and I need advice from you guys on using it to lift my Super III. Aside from the obvious exhaust and oil lines, what else should I watch out for on the under belly? Any advice before I hoist her up would be great. I've attached pix of the area in question.

Thanks.

How about some pics of the lift? There are a few different kinds out there.

Cheers,

Lift Picture

Here's a picture of the lift (Craftsman aluminum). I'll custom make a plate to go between the lift arms and the bike. My main question is what are the structural areas of the underside of the bike that I can use to safely lift the 500 lbs.?

Thanks.

You should be able to get away with a couple chunks of 2x4 with a lift like that. You want to be sure you're putting pressure on the bottom of the motor, not the oil filter cover or downpipes... I can't really think of anything else that's down there to avoid; am I forgetting anything guys?

Cheers,
-Kit

I used a nearly identical stand to store my bike over the previous winter. Getting it lined up properly was a bit tricky but doable, however I found that the front tended to want to come up (balance point was too far forward; unavoidable as the pipes were in the way otherwise). The stand had loops for attaching tie-down belts (being very careful not to wrap them around something that can be squashed, etc.) so I used that to stabilize the bike so that I could (gently) move it around if necessary. My lift came with a locking bar so that the bike wouldn't suddenly drop if hydraulic pressure was lost. Letting the jack down slowly, allowing the locking bar to take the weight reduces pressure on the jack which is basically just a bottle jack stuffed into the bottom of a lifting frame. I will be looking to fabricate something to put on the lifting arms for this year, but your jack should do quite well, as Kit has said. Mine has done a fine job (so far). Of course you may have to remove the fairing belly pan to get to the proper balance point.
