Ned shock fitted but strange seat height

I finally got the shock replaced on my 91 Trident with one sourced from a Speed Triple, but the seat height is now 33"! This seems odd, I thought the standard ride height for a Trident was 30.5" and that the S3 shock was a straight swap... I can't see how I could have fitted anything wrongly to make up this difference.

It doesn't bother me because I'm 6'4" and always found the bike too low anyway, but can anyone account for the difference?

Presumably there are no safety implications? It seems to ride OK.

The S3 and Daytonas need more cornering clearance, so their shock absorbers are longer with stiffer springs, I reckon.

6ft 4inch......blimey looks like we'll be calling you sir in the future...!!

As for the shock length...not sure what's going on there ??? I've got a 34 inside leg so higher the better for me..plus should give you a better turn in..perhaps the old spring was shot ??

The shock linkages are around 4:1...so any additional shock length will be multiplied and presto raised or lowered seat.

(or shortened)

New shock

Thanks folks I think I'll just be glad of the extra height and ride it. Maybe less preload though, it's on 4 and hardly goes down even with my 17st on it.

That does seem odd, and I don't recall seeing anything in the parts fiche that would account for this. The Speed Triple and Trident used the same shock in '95, and I don't think the linkages ever changed...

Weird, but if it rides ok, it rides ok. That's what's important!

Cheers,
-Kit

Well I've spent a fair bit of time wrestling with the Trident since I bought it- mostly corroded fasteners - and the airbox/carbs of course.

Speaking of which, I been looking at a few recent and older threads on here, and I just can't believe that it's not possible to replace them with something easier to maintain... but perhaps I'd better not open up that debate (again).

Replacing the airbox with pods is dead easy! It's making the bike run right after that's hard...

Cheers,
