weird: run 4 miles, die, cool off, start, run 4 miles, die, cool, restart, and so on
Riding into town on freeway last night on my 1995 Daytona Super III doing about 70 MPH experienced a little hiccup and backfire but kept running another mile then died completely for a second or two like tripping the kill switch, which I wiggled, suddenly it caught and kept going fine another mile or so then died completely again, all lights stayed on and working, but dead motor, no spark, no tach. Pulled off the highway a few feet, removed my helmet, put it on the centerstand, opened the seat up, wiggled some wires, spun it a few times and it fired back up again, rode another 2 miles or so, suddenly died again like cutting a light switch. Would not start, no spark, so called a buddy, he was due in ten minutes, fiddled with sidestand safety switch and wiggled unknown wires underneath seat again, suddenly fired up OK, turned around and headed back home a distance of 20 miles or so.
Got about 3 miles down the road at 60 or so, hit a little bump, motor immediately shuts off, coast another second or two, hit another bump, motor fires up again, runs another 20 seconds or so, then no spark again, coast to side of road. Wiggle wires, slap sidestand up and down, no go. Take off helmet, cool down a minute, thump randomly under seat, suddenly motor fires again and off for about 4 miles this time, another bump, motor dies but this time I jump up and down on seat to bounce the bike, keeps going again for a mile or two then shuts off completely again. But I discover that bouncing the bike can make it recover briefly.
Now I know the procedure: wiggle wires and switches, wait a little bit, fire up and drive off. Goes another 4 miles or so, dies, coast to stop, let cool a few minutes, then fire up and go. After an hour or more, I have stopped a half dozen times but covered the 20 miles back to my place, where it dies again right at my driveway. Wait a couple minutes and it fires up again, no wire wiggling required. I shove it in the garage, hop on my ‘dependable’ Harley and head back into town.
Today I attack the sidestand safety switch thinking that is the culprit, so I clean connections, lubricate the switch mechanism, tighten screws, etc. Remove the battery, re-plug all visible connectors, and wiggle wiring harness generously. Take it out for a test drive of exactly 5.2 miles where it drops dead again, wait about 3 minutes and it starts up – but right back to the barn for this one.
What could make the engine run intermittently for 5 minutes at a time, over and over? It’s not like running out of gas; it’s like flipping the kill switch or dropping the sidestand. A few times after it died, I would spin it and get minor pops and spits similar to trying to start it in gear with the sidestand down. Could this be related to the “three second delay” built into the starting circuit to protect the faulty sprag (that killed my Thunderbird)?
All ideas appreciated
