Urgent Help Need Refitting Carbs and New Airbox

Hi Guys,

OMG!!!.. The design of this bike in this area ... is ...err...well nevermind.

When I took the carbs off I took the inlet rubbers off as well. Was this a mistake?

It seems now that although everything seems to be in place easily between engine and carbs, I cannot fit the airbox to the back of the carbs. It can fit the furthest left or right carb to the airbox, but not the other two without the original popping off.

I have been told the rubbers are handed? Are they individual too?

Please please can anyone shed any light on this disaster? LOL

I have been building / rebuilding / mending bikes since I was 16, I am now 41, and I've never seen such a tight arrangement for a serviceable item. I cannot see any marking on the rubbers at all?

Help guys what am I missing?

Cheers

I put the airbox in before the carbs. Leave the cables hooked up. You can push the airbox back and squeeze the carbs in.

I think.

Have a good look at the middle one - it could be that in the process of putting the carbs back in you have folded the rim of the rubber in preventing it from going on to the carb - DAMHIK!

Its possible. I thought I had them right..

However, do you know if the carb rubbers (engine to carb) are all the same or not?

Yes the engine to carb rubbers are the same and the carb to airbox rubbers are the same. It may be possible that you have put them onto the engine the wrong way round but I don't know if that is possible

A can of silicone spray?

I find it makes all the difference. Also make sure the rubbers are in good condition - they're not too dear so replace if necessary. Like the poster above says if they're slightly folded over it's impossible.

I find that some silicone spray and then pushing the airbox onto the carbs while wiggling the airbox does it.

This is good news ( I guess :-) )

I'll give it half a can of Silicon. Its probably the centre rubber as was said above. Its very difficult to see whats going on really.

Is is just me, or does everyone think this is a crappy way of doing things?

It's just you. Everyone else loves the carb/airbox arrangement on these bikes.

Seriously, if the stock setup didn't work so well, and if it wasn't so hard to make the Mikunis run right with pods, no one would use the stock airbox. But it does work really well, and these Mikunis don't play nice with pods as a general rule, so most of us are stuck with this airbox.

Cheers,
-Kit

Cool

.. I am sure I just got the centre one holding the others off.

Let me make sure I got this right.

The widest part of the carb inlet rubber should face top, forcing the carbs down...is that right?
