ongoing turn signal installation

I'm installing a complete set of turn signals on to my Super III, which were absent from the last owner. I've put on three Buell signals, as recommended by another forum poster, and I'll get the fourth one in today. So far, the signals are not working. I know the lights work, from hooking them directly to feed. I hear the flasher click once, so I know power is reaching the relay.

Could it be that I need the final fourth signal installed to complete the circuit, in order to provide the relay with a complete load in order to function? If that's not it, I'm thinking I need a new flasher. Since Triumph charges...GULP!...78 bucks for a new flasher (I'm not joking), is there any reason I can't use some mongrel flasher, so long as it operates on 12 volts, 10 amps, and accommodates the same 3-prong connector?

Flasher you can get from car parts so long as it has the same pin numbers on it should cost between 6-15 quid..

Don't know about completing the circuit or not but there is a fuse holder on the rear subframe top rail that has a 5A in it for the turn signals might be worth a check ???

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, MotT3. By pin number, are you refering to the Hella part number, or the number series that includes 10A/12V? And concerning the fuse....are you referring to a fuse inside of the fuse box? because I don't see a 5A fuse in there, nor is there a fuse labeled for turn signals. Is this a separate fuse holder located elsewhere under the seat?

When I installed mine I had to change the wires around on one of them as it was not working - like if you hook up an led the wrong way round. I didn't investigate beyond that but don't know why a standard filament bulb would do that unless there is a diode in the unit somewhere. As for completing the circuit - usually if you have one missing the remaining unit will flash faster than normal but should otherwise work - the left and right circuits should work independently. Sorry about the heavy use of 'should'

If you unplug the relay and look at the pins they normally have numbers & letters next to them...just take it with you to car parts shop and marry up like for like ;-)

Fuse holder is not on the main fuse box...but a small black plastic case about big enough for one fuse left of the igniter box on the l/h frame rail...

yes, I found the fuse holder you were talking about, you gave a verg good description. The fuse itself was fine. I took out the flasher, went to AutoZone, where I bought a universal, 3-prong flasher relay for ten bucks. Come to find, the Buell guys I bought the turn signals from could sell me a Buell flasher, too, also for ten bucks. Left me feeling pretty hosed by Triumph, I'll tell you. thanks for your help.
