Upgrade Temperature Gauge

I have a 94 Sprint 900. I'd like to upgrade the temp gauge to one that gives me operating temp in degrees. Anyone done anything like this? If so, details please. kr

This may help...

Hi Spanner,

While I haven't done it myself, I did run across a couple of parts suppliers who have kits to add a temperature gauge to a liquid cooled ATV or bike.

I've no idea what's involved in doing it, but if no one else has done it, it could give you a decent starting point.

By the way, as I perused the paint aisle at the local Crappy Tire store, I found a green paint that seems to be quite close to our British Racing Green. I'll be trying it out on an old helmet in a while and I'll see how it looks. The colour is Volkswagen "Dragon" green.

VW green

Hey Darth,

Let us know how that paint works. I have a 97 Sprint that has lost some from the previous owner - would be nice to touch up.

FYI on the paint- Triumph has a page here:

http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/2046.aspx

That lists all the colors by name with manufacturer code and Triumph touch-up part number. BRG is as follows:

BRITISH RACING GREEN DUPONT 461210101 T3120300-HA
The touch-up kit should be about $20 from the dealer.

Cheers,
-Kit

Thanks Kit! Getting the exact colour is always better than getting "almost" the same. Now to see if someone around here actually carries or has access to the kit.

back to the temp gauge

I wanted to do the same thing, run a temp gauge with the actual temp on it. I looked around a bit and got distracted. I was looking for a waterproof gauge but that's probably not necessary. The sending unit will need metric threads which is more common that it used to be. VDO probably has something that will work. Aerostitch/RiderWearHouse might have a digital unit but look in the catalog, I didn't see anything online. Let us know what you figure out.

You could go with a compact unit like the Shindy Daytona (at least sounds like a Triumph!)

If it was me, I'd prefer to install a round gauge in the OEM location.
There are a ton of options there!

Check out here for lots of possibilities

While you're at it, how about taking it one step further & upgrading the speedo to an electronic one?
You could accommodate the round 'analog-look' electronic speedo & sender from the 99-02 Sprint ST

I know the late electronic sender is form/fit replacement for the mechanical one (I checked that mechanical sender is same used on 97-01 S3 and I KNOW that is form & fit interchange with the 99-04 Sprint electronic sender)
That sender unit is plug n play swap
Or a lower cost DIY alternative for sender is this solution

Here's a Sprint speedo that has been installed in a 97-01 Speed Triple cluster (same principle)
This on member Lugan's bike - http://www.triumphrat.net/sprint-for...otorcycle.html

It's a fairly simple wiring integration and relatively uncomplicated mechanical install to mount the speedo in the older gen shell.

Once you go electronic you can further improve the indicated speed accuracy by adding a speed healer as desired.

Match for 900-series British Racing Green

Quote:
The colour is Volkswagen "Dragon" green.
There is a very close match in the Ford Duplicolor line: Emerald Green Dark. It has an almost exact green undercolor with a slight blue shift gloss. Hard to tell it isn't original.
