When does your cooling fan come on?
Right...I have NEVER heard my cooling fan kick in. I assumed this was normal until a friend of mine bought a Sprint sport. His seems to come on quite frequently.
Looking at a couple of threads on here it seems they normally come on sooner rather than later. Having said that my bike has never over heated and doesnt take long to warm up.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Gav

Cooling Fan
I have a '94 Sprint 900. It runs cool on roads but heats up rapidly in urban stop and go traffic. I never heard the fan go on so I was worried. Folks said "don't worry you will hear the fan come on". I worried. I removed all the plastic and ran power to the fan. It worked, so to be safe, I replace the fan switch. I ran the bike in my driveway till the fan came on. The fan noise is quite audible. Then I rode for awhile watching the temp gauge but didn't hear it turn on. Stopped and took my helmet off. Now I hear the fan. So, my experience is it works but I can't hear it underway with full-face helmet on!

Gav, No idea what the actual temperature should be and the analog temp gauges seem not to compare well bike to bike. I let my '98 idle in the garage 'till the fan started and marked the gauge with a small perm. ink dot, which on my gauge was just short of half way up.

I have a '00 Sprint RS, with a digital temp gauge. The times I have heard the fan come on while idling, it seems to kick on around 101 degrees C. It also runs for a few minutes after I shut the bike off.

Hi i have a 94 speed triple & have never heard the fan come on either , i know i should check it but never got round to it.. my 03 speed triple used to cut in many times in urban traffic . Anyone know of a simple test ??? as speed triples don't have a temp gauge just a light i've never really bothered but now i'm starting to worry !!!!

My Trident fan has only kicked in once that I've noticed in 2 years, and that was in city (well Swansea!) traffic on one of the hottest days of the year. Fortunately most of my mileage seems to be on more open roads :-)not that I've been doing much lately

I also have a 1994 Sprint and the only time my fan has come on was after some low speed running in slow traffic on a hot day. On one or two occasions, it came on after the bike was turned off following a slow run on a hot day. In each case, the indicator was past the halfway point on the gauge. It's very difficult to hear with a helmet on and the engine running. From what I gather reading various threads in this forum, the older 900's tended to run cool. At highway speeds (OK, maybe a bit above highway speeds ) even on a hot day my gauge doesn't register very far above the 2nd mark on the gauge. Just make sure to check your overflow tank so that your coolant level doesn't drop below the "MIN" mark.

As I mentioned elsewhere, my temp gauge has never gone more than two mm into the normal operating zone. It reaches that point quickly, maybe 1.5 miles on a chilly day. After that, it hasn't budged. But then again I don't leave the bike idling for ages, either.

I have found the fan on my '96 speed Triple will only ever come on in slow traffic- and it comes on at pretty high tempb(Ibthink I heard/read somewhere that it was something like 105C! ). Usually will hear it but not always...I also feel the extra heat coming back on my legs particularly in stop/start traffic.

I didn't think my fan was working as when I was stuck in slow traffic (no more since I left Sydney ) the temp light used to come on on the dash. It never overheated or showed any problems. So I ran power straight to the fan and it worked so I replaced the fan switch but still the temp light came on in traffic. Finally I warmed the engine up to temp on a ride then when I got home I left it idling in the garage until the temp light again came on. A short time later the fan cut in and the light went to a flicker but didn't fully go out. The trick is to stay on the move and you'll have a lot more fun
