Fitting S3 shock to Trident

I bought a shock from a Speed Triple to replace the knackered, non-adjustable one on my 91 Trident. It seems to fit OK, it's obvious where the damping adjuster bolts up but I can't see how to mount the reservoir. The bracket looks to be the same width as the bracket on the petrol tank - does it go here somewhere? If so, how?

Also, according to Haynes, the rear suspension (linkage etc) is supposed to be greased with 'molybdenum disulphide grease' - what is that, is is different to ordinary grease, and does it mean I've got to buy another grease gun

Hi screene,

I can't answer your question about the shock but I do know that moly grease is black and sticky and quite different to general purpose grease.

It has good lubrication properties in harsh environments and is resistant to washing out with water etc, so a good choice for the shock considering the amount of rubbish thrown up at it.

I would buy a small gun just for the shock greasing, you would probably only use it a few times a year but probably worth the expense to get the grease in there on a regular basis.

IIRC, the preload adjuster bolts up next to the battery, under the seat. (I know for sure that the preload adjuster is the thing that looks like a reservoir.) Have a peek at the schematics at Bike Bandit to see what I'm talking about, and possibly to order a bracket.

As for the grease, you don't want to mix bases. Moly is an additive, so you may be able to find it in the same base as whatever you usually use, in which case it wouldn't really be a problem to share a gun. I don't know what base you usually use, but it's probably lithium, and you can probably find lithium-based moly grease. All that being said, grease guns are pretty cheap...

Thanks for your help once again Roden and Kit.

Bike bandit shows the part as "BRIDGE, PRE-LOAD ADJUSTER" but it's not clear where it goes. I'll take the tank off and see if it's any clearer... given that the S3 and Trident shared the same frame, it must fit somewhere.

I guess you're right about grease guns being cheap - it's just that I'm trying really hard not to buy more tools - it seems like every time I do something on the Trident it involves buying more tools to get it apart, and even more to put it back together
