Keihins installed and Tuned

So, my changeover from Mikunis to Keihins is complete and I put 50 miles on the bike coming back from the dealer. Big smiles on my face coming home down the interstate! The bike gained 6 hp at top end and some power throughout the whole range. Since they were due I had the valves adjusted prior to putting it on the dyno. Every single valve was tight! It sure feels a lot smoother now with everything tuned up. There is a definite lower rumble from the pipes that sounds great. The shop put on the carbs and did an initial run, then jetted them and fiddled around a little. Here is a summary of the initial run with Mikunis, the first run with the Keihins, and a run with the Keihins with everything sorted out but the pilot jets. After that I decided to switch out the pilot jets to 40s to richen things up at the lower end but I didn’t get a run with them on. Max power was 92.5 and the fuel to air ration was even across the range with no real flat spots (an unnoticeable small spot at around 8400). Just for info I’m running pod filters and Micron pipes. Overall I’m really pleased, so far. Final verdict was:

Mains 138
Pilots 40
2 shims on the needles
4.5 turns out on the pilot screw

A few pictures and the readout for your enjoyment. I also put in a few shots of my six pot conversion. Cheers all,

Bernie

the Keihins had around 30k on them. Floats and float valves were fine, but they had a bit of dirt in them and some dried out gas. I cleaned them up real well and pulled them completely apart before the install and tuning. They turned out looking and performing really well.

Love the brakes, hate how it shows me what a mushy front end the bike has. My next big project will be to tackle the forks, either a changeout if I can find some adjustable ones or new springs, valve and oil. I just used my existing 14mm master cylinder on the 6 pots and they work wonderful. Bleeding them, well lets say that a bottle and a half of fluid, a whole lot of words that I wouldn't repeat in polite company.....Hope I never have to pull them completely off and go through that again.

Here's a picture of the whole bike

After fighting with the airbox/carbs on my sprint Sport again (I'd rather do a valve adjustment anyday rather than R&R the carbs/airbox). what are the part #'s/procedures for switching to the pods? I imagine that the carbs need to be adjusted? The next time I have to take the carbs/airbox off, I'd like to not ever have to wrestle with the reinstall ever again.

Dean, you can buy the K & N pods, which retail for $50 each, or you can pick up some generic pod filters like these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-UNI...1%7C240%3A1318

Cost for the Emgo set of 4 was $30. That was all I needed to make a decision. Get some that are 54mm id.

As for the carbs, you will definitely need to rejet, size of jets and settings will be dependent on the mufflers you are running and your individual bike. Mine was fine with 138 mains. Others have posted everything up to 148 mains. It appears that the carbs will work ok over a wide range but the only way you can know if you have things correct is by dyno. My dyno runs are under the link in my original post.

Good to hear you enjoying your new carbs but i`m suprised that the shop didn`t say to you that you need to go upto 42 pilot jets as after 3 1/2 turns out on the pilot air screw then your 40`s are letting through as much as they can.
