Exclamation Hello all newbie needs HELP.

Hello All and erm HHHHEEELLLLLLPPPP

I am a trumpet newbie and jumped in with both feet when i found this 1998 trident sprint sport. She was a 1 owner bike, 47000 miles with full service history, all service stamps, mots, old tax discs and 5 grand in old bills, both keys, even down to the original bill of sale.

She is cosmetically challenged. The seat was ripped but bought an as new one from fleabay. The screen is crazzed and needs replacing and have found a company thats just down the road (sprint engineering) and they stock them.

The main mechanical problem is: when setting off there is a rumble on the left side of the engine but when the revs get to about 4 to 5 thou it smooths out?, almost like what ever was spinning has caught up with the crank?????. Very hard to explain.

Any help would be fab, cheers all, jim.

Welcome, Jim! Sprint Manufacturing is well-known & quite respected here; you're lucky to have such a great resource so close.

As far as your odd sounds from the engine... I just don't know. I think I've heard people talking about the broken alternator bolt say that the sound disappeared at higher revs, but I'm certain I've never heard anyone describe it as a rumble. Perhaps one of our UK members is close enough to you to have a listen? I think that's the hardest part of Internet tech forums, translating sounds into words.

Cheers,
-Kit

Hi Jim,

Difficult to say what the problem might be without hearing/feeling it..?

But..

It may not all be bad news..as Kit says there is a regular problem with the alternator which can be fixed for good fairly easily, but I'm thinking...have you had a triple before, only reason I say is that they can feel like a bit of a shock after a 4 or something, because first impressions are that they are running rough but it's really just different from the others, you can get the engine to rumble a bit if it's pulling too high a gear ?

They are noisy engines at best and you would not be the first paranoid person to think the thing is going to distruct.

Well here is hoping there is no problem at all...good luck with it all the same ;-)

rumbly triple

Hey jim - a fellow newbie called jim here. i'm not that close to you but occasionally ride from devon to bath to see folks. if you want to meet up and compare bikes i'm more than happy - a mate has a sprint sport and it was very helpful to ride his and realise mine was fine - or both our bikes are knackered! mine rumbles if running too high a gear, and has a real buz/vibration at 3000 revs which i think is the cam chain/tensioner. All engines will be a bit different depending on how well run in etc. good luck!

Another possibility for a uneveness and a bit of a rubble / rattle is the clutch basket. I understand its not uncommon for them to resonate a bit. I think mine does it at about 2800 seems to have sorted itself out by 3200. Apparently you can shim it out if you are very patient but it doesn't seem to cause any problems so I just left it.

YAAA (jumps up and down) a local(ish) boy, mate i would ride to devon if it meant i could work out whats going on!!. On a serious note i am happy to meet anywhere at any time.

My tool kit seems to have let me down, is it normal for most of the bolts on a triumph to be torx?.

cheers, jim.

MANY, MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE GOT BACK TO ME.

On an old gs1000 i had, there was a similar noise which turned out to be the starter clutch bearings giving up the ghost. Is that something worth looking into?. In answer to another question, yes this is my first triumph after having only jap bikes. I just got this sense on solidity when on the sprint, it just feels solid?. Will just check the adds to see if there is a screen going cheep. cheers, jim.
