gaskets or sealer

I am wondering......

When putting my cases back together on a sprag clutch repair.

Which gasket sealer should I use?

Can "liquid gasket" be used on all the smaller case covers like clutch cover timing cover etc. etc.??

Hi,

Normally then you`d use gaskets with a light smear of liquid gasket if needed as a backup but if you don`t have any gaskets then yes you could get away with just liquid gasket but read warning below very carefully.

Warning......
You have to be very careful when tightening the bolts as you won`t have the same cushion effect a proper gasket will give so you`ll run a very high risk of either snapping bolts or stripping the thread on the casings even using a torque wrench as the setting are produced to include gasket cushioning.

Cheers, Matt

i assume you are using the old gaskets, and want to use sealant just to ensure a good seal?
there really is no substitute for a new gasket, but i know how much they cost, and have sparingly used sealant myself.the risk, is the bits that are squeezed out of the joint can fall off in the engine, and block oil ways.

Use gaskets.

If you really can't afford the gaskets, I have a set of tiff files you can print out & use as a template. (It should be fine for the smaller ones, but the larger ones may be a bit distorted.)

Cheers,
-Kit

thanks Kit. Never dawned on me to make them......your like McGyver!

Not really that I can't afford them, just wondering if I needed to at all. Seemed if gasket "maker" can hold the engine cases together and keep oil in then sealing a 12 oz. camshaft cover seems like a simple task, and would require no further purchase of cost redundant paper gaskets (o.k. I am cheap go ahead you can say it, I am aware) However I prefer "frugal".

I also see Matts point of tourqe issues and overtightning/stripping bolts etc. when no gasket is used.
Maybe I am fighting city hall with this?
Tomato Toma-to sort of thing?

TO gasket or not to gasket? That IS the question.......

O.k. Daytona makes a good point as well, and the more times I use the "liquid sealer" the more opportunity for squeeze over to enter the engine. In all I am convinced.

So teach me more about this gasket making you speak of what type paper would I use?:

I must've taken my gasket set to the garage, I can't find it anywhere. I do have some T695 gasket kicking around, though. They're made of InterFace TS-9013.

I have never actually made the gaskets, just imagined several scenarios where having the templates would be a lifesaver.

Cheers,
-Kit

Normally you gasket paper that you can pickup at an auto shop but if your stuck then you can use thin plastic sheet or even a chopped up plastic milk container.

This approach might not be the norm but they do work and will sort you out if your somewhere you don`t have access to proper parts.
