Street Triple R - It's Official

The guessing and rumours and waiting are over, as of today:
http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/News_10720.aspx

All that's left now is for the prices, full specs and more pictures to show up on the Web site.

Only one totally new model was announced (the big twin Thunderbird, which apparently is slated to be a 2010 model) and the sorta-new R version of the Street, but there are revisions to several other models, including a few improvements to the Daytona, apparently. No Tiger Cub on the list, sadly.

Probably looking at 3 grand more to get Triumph's goodies?

I would be greatly surprised if the difference were much more than half that much.

Thanks Diego. I certainly would be interested in this bike but was holding off until more information was available.

I would be surprised if Triumph could justify pushing the price up too far since the Street would always be less than the new Daytona and the price of the D675 will be dictated by the price of Japanese competitors.

Triumph could charge more from the prestige marque aspect though I doubt they'd have a great deal of success because a lot of people would simply choose the Jap bike on price plus other factors (availability and a perceived better reliability).

My problem is that every time I think about getting somethin else I ride the Street and determine that nothing better suits me so another, slightly higher spec version of the same bike is the only serious option for me (after about a year of ownership)

Cost of upgrading plain Street to R spec?

Hi.

I've now got a slightly urgent question. I can potentially swap my deposit on a black Street Triple which should turn up pretty soon, with an R available (according to Triumph) around xmas time (note this may mean April next year ...) - the thing is, I'll have to move on this pretty much now if I'm going to do it.

I prefer the black finish of the stock bike, and was planning on upgrading the stock shock and perhaps forks / brakes (if reasonable) as well down the line, depending on how much track use it sees.

I'm curious how much I'd likely have to spend (Australian dollars) to bring the stock bike in line with the official R version or to surpass it. I'm assuming it will be more than the R, since I have to purchase both stock AND upgrade components ...

So, what components, and how much effort, would be required to match or exceed the Daytona spec components (prices in $AUD for bonus points)? Are brakes / forks as easily upgraded as shocks (e.g. the front disc is different on the R). I have fairly modest mechanical aptitude and some tools, but no workshop.

In a nutshell: how much of a value offering will the 'R' be (knowing what we know about its price point), and does it represent something difficult for the casual aftermarket shopper to obtain with the stock bike? Would you hold out, or buy stock and upgrade later according to your needs?

thanks in advance for any advice forthcoming ...

EDIT:

"Around 3 grand for Ohlinized forks, brakes, & rear shock.
One could probably save a grand or more by using stock Daytona forks." - http://www.triumph675.net/forum/showthread.php?t=22052

oh my ... USD too I assume. Is there a cheaper route?

Since the exact spec of the "R" and the price are not released you'll get nothing more than guesses here.

Best bet is to get the bike now and upgrade later because, as you said yourself, a new year delivery is more likely to be March / April.

If you were very lucky it could be sooner but who knows?

Given the fact that there are already a lot of deposits down on the "R" (at least 3 at my local dealer) there is likely to be a similar queue / delay on the "R" as there has been on the standard model.

But of course I'm guessing! ;-)

I don't know why they didn't just build it properly in the first place with a decent shock and fork/brakes.Not to sure on the colour either although it does look a little better in the flesh, especially the orange graphics.

Sigh. Because it wasn't intended to be a naked Daytona, that's why.

But apparently the R are--er, is, closer to the mark.

The answer was (you'd need to scroll back to my early posts here): Head-on pricing with Honda's 600cc Hornet. Which Triumph and its dealers have achieved in many (most?) European countries. And which, I'd submit, has contributed to the current order backlog. Or to say it in a more positive fashion, to the Streety' INCREDIBLE success.

The "R" is for connoisseurs. I am starting to reconsider my plan to keep on gradually upgrading my own Streety. Sigh! Jamie
