Street Triple stalling issue

I have a 2011 Street Triple R. Starting about a month ago, the bike will occasionally, randomly stall when I'm coming to a stop and the clutch is pulled in. Sometimes the idle will dip really low and recover, and other times it just flat-out stalls.

I was having this issue occur roughly once per week at first (I commute daily), and then eventually it seemed to happen about once per ride. I brought the bike to a local Triumph dealer and they couldn't diagnose a problem (though they reproduced the issue once). When I took the bike home, the stalling happened FIVE times within the span of about two miles.

Here's what the shop service notes say.

Cam chain is noisy.
Auto scan OK, no error codes stored.
Reset adaptations.
Checked throttle bodies, in sync.
Performed functions tests, idle stepper motor (.601v in range).
Checked throttle position sensor (.605v in range).
They recommended I run the bike with Seafoam in the gas for a few tankfulls, but at this rate I'm dreading riding the bike for a few hundred miles with this issue occurring as frequently as it just did.

Any thoughts? The bike is stock.

Oh, and because threads are more fun with pictures, here's my bike:

I have noticed one other thing, which may or may not help in diagnosing the issue. Because I'm afraid the bike will stall when I come to a stop, I've been holding the throttle ever-so-slightly open with the clutch pulled in to prevent the engine from dropping RPMs past idle. When doing this, the RPMs feels erratic -- it'll hesitate and barely keep above 1000 RPM, then speed past 2000 RPM without me changing throttle position. It then becomes a challenge to keep the motor revving at just under 2000 RPM until I come to a stop. (I tried reproducing this throttle behavior with the bike parked and had no luck -- it seemed totally normal while parked.)

When you brought it to the dealer, did they re-adapt/12-minute tune the bike? I've heard re-uploading the most current tune for the bike will help as well. If it has the hunting/stalling problem under load, I would look to fueling or maybe an air leak that shows itself under load. Also, look into cleaning/replacing your clutch switch and adjusting your clutch cable. Should have a 2-3 mm gap/free play in the lever and perch.

Mileage on the bike? Valve clearances and timing (you did say cam chain is noisy) could also be the cause, but unless I'm riding the bike or see it in person, won't be able to diag it.

I believe so. The service sheet says "reset adaptations" and I recall the tech mentioning that while talking on the phone. FWIW, I have also done a "12-minute tune" in my driveway before bringing the bike to the shop, but it didn't appear to have any effect. If anything, the bike is behaving worse after taking it back from the dealer -- specifically, the light-throttle erratic response is significantly worse.

The hunting/stalling happens only on light/no throttle. Fortunately. I haven't had any issues on the freeway, except when cruising at low RPM with very light throttle I can feel the erratic throttle strength. I'll check the clutch cable, a good thing to check though I'm pretty sure it's not an issue with the clutch failing to disengage. The stall will happen while I'm coming to a stop, but actually before the bike is fully stopped, when the clutch is pulled in, revs drop, and I'm still rolling.

~18,000 miles, valves checked at 12,500 miles (were in spec, no adjustments made).

Hold on, you say you got the bike back from the dealer and it idles erratically and has a noisy cam chain? You better ask for your money back. I have read on other threads that if the little rubber tube to the underside of the manifold pressure sensor is not connected then it can cause erratic idling. (located at the bottom left of the airbox). This can easily be overlooked on re-assembly when a valve check is done. If the cam chain is noisy (especially on cold start-up) then you might have a stuck cam chain tensioner. I'm not sure if your model has the spring-loaded ratchet-type CCT on earlier models or if it has the newer hydraulic tensioner they started using in 2011. The earlier ratchet-type was prone to sticking and I replaced mine (2010 model) with a manually adjustable APE tensioner which has been very reliable and hasn't needed adjustment yet.

The stalling/hunting idle is the same issue I had before bringing the bike to the shop, but it seems to have gotten worse. The cam chain noise is not something I can identify -- if it's noisy now, it was noisy before I brought the bike there. Just sounds like a motorcycle to me.

Hello Angel,

Several street triples in India have this problem. Triumph rectified it by apparently sorting the airbox, a remap and bringing the airbox back to UK / US spec. I also believe that they needed to perform a throttle body clean and stepper motor clean up job every 3000 km.

In India, the conditions are quite dusty, so elsewhere the cleaning frequency may be different.

PS - i do not have a street triple, but am looking to get one. So was doing some research and this is what I came across.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I am a street triple user since 2015, I have the 2014 ABS model.

I have had the same stalling issue. It comes up about a few months before it’s due for an annual or 10k km service. I am told cleaning up the throttle body solves the problem. I live near a very busy road, my bike is exposed to a lot of dust. Regular annual services, and regular weekly rides help minimise the build up of dust in the airflow pathway and creating the stalling at low rev or idle issue.

I have this problem on my 2013. Stalling out before coming to a stop with clutch pulled in. If I downshift into first before the stop, however, it doesn’t stall. Took to a dealer. They did an update and now the bike only starts in neutral, but the other issue is resolved. They said Triumph agreed that it’s the clutch. Gave me a $1,000 estimate. Bike has 62,000 miles.
