Good day all,
I'm planning to install a RAM mount bolt to replace one of the four of the handlebar clamp (remeber it's the R so the handlebar is oversize at the clamp). Does anyone know the bolt size don't know if its M8 or other size. If you have suggestions for other location of the RAM ball, they are all welcome.
Thank you guys!
I use the steering stem adapter on my Triple. It's less obtrusive than the clamp bolt which I have to use on my Bonneville (and I usually remove when I'm done).
If you have bar end mirrors you can replace the brake res bolt with a RAM-B-349. I tried it as an alternate place to mount a video camera, too much vibration for my tastes.
What kind of camera are you running and how bad was it? I was thinking about trying that out with a go pro session when I get bar ends but may pass if it is really bad.
To the OP: I just got one of these http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-231ZU along with an x-grip. Gonna test it out tomorrow I have it mounted to the clutch side it seems solid.
Now I have changed my mind... thank you beatle!
I've decided to use the stem tube clamp instead, as it's a little bit offset not just on top of the tube I think it will fit nicely, and when not in use it stay quite low-profile!
I've seen a few of these stem types come loose including the one I tried. BTDT The main bolt/screw is not all that sturdy and the amount of pressure you need to keep it in place will deform the piece that gets pulled up, which then gets loose. Another one the bolt just stripped out, another sheared off.
I'm with JonBon3. I don't see why one would choose the stem mount over the bolt replacement. Bolt replacement is way more secure. I have it and love it.
I hope your stem mount doesn't come loose! I'd hate to lose my phone or GPS because of it.
So maybe I have changed my mind again back to my original intentions!
Never thought about the stem mount coming loose, but because of the way of attaching it really makes sense, compared to the safer bolted option.
I've never had an issue with my stem nut mount coming loose. I don't see how this could be a problem. It operates just like a bar end insert with an expanding rubber sleeve. There is nothing constantly "pulling" the mount up and out of the hole either; it's at rest. I've used it as a mount for my phone as well as my GoPro on the track without a hint of it coming out. When I did remove it to transfer it to another bike, it took a fair amount of effort to pull out of the stem.
We had this conversation when you came over. I also had the RAM stem mount come loose quite easily and often. The 3mm hex head is just too small to really torque it down properly, so of course, I had to get elaborate. I already had one of the bar clamp mounts, so I figured a way to get make a better mount for the stem. I got a CRG bar end mirror adapter, put it in a lathe and turned the mating surface for the mirror off.
Then I cut some of the shank off the ball and using a longer M6 bolt and just the smaller aluminum bits of the adapter, I was able to get a much more solid mount, that doesn't come loose.
I have since changed that ball out for a RAM-B-252U I also had laying around to move the ball away from the bar.
I barely used mine before I took it off, so I don't know if it would fall out or not. I suppose if you hit a big enough bump? :dunno
I have that cradle in my garage. It grips very solidly - even over a case - and as you can see, you can move one or both of the pegs on the one end to keep them from hitting buttons. The pegs on the long sides are just fixed pegs, and are just there to prevent the phone from sliding out sideways, so they don't need to be very tight.
