New Zealand - UK stripper going south (way south)

Guys,

I don't know how serious this is because I need a job to get in and I don't have a job there yet but I am fairly seriously pursuing the idea of emigrating to NZ. The sooner the better for me but these things tend to drag on and I can't see myself being there until the end of the year at the earliest (who knows though).....

Anyway, a few years back a friend emigrated and took his beloved TVR only to find that the car, used / a few years old at that time, could not legitimately be used on the roads. He now has a beautiful but pointless car sat in his garage because its too expensive to ship it back to the UK.

This brings me to my bloved Strippy. I'm interested in the Dunedin area but could end up anywhere. Does anyone have any recent / relevant experience and or knowledge. I recal seeing a fellow poster was from an NZ dealer so maybe they'd enjoy servicing my bike if/when it arrived.

I was thinking of selling it and getting a new one but I can't even stand the thought of getting rid of her.

NZ should be no problem for a Triumph -- it's a popular make there. The new bikes as far as I know are essentially the same for all markets, so you should not have a problem.

Thunderbike in Nelson would be my first recommendation for a dealer on the South Island. The owners (John and Ian Fitzwater) are serious bike guys, Triumph fans, and also run a tour company (gotournz.com). I will shamelessly promote them since I toured with them in 2004 and they were simply fantastic.

And NZ has among the best motorcycling roads I've come across...

Slightly OT, I Hope!

I've been mulling over Jon's choice of words in the subject line of this thread, and can see the logic in owners of machines nicknamed "Striples" therefore calling themselves "strippers."

However, there is also a current thread about checking speedometers against GPS. The combination is a source of concern.

I just hope it doesn't mean people will soon be saying of us, "Yeah, there goes one o' them strippers. You can tell by how far off his Speedo is."

We now return you to your regular life, already in progress.

If you are thinking of bringing your striple I suggest the you find out the cost first. You may be better off selling it in the UK and getting another one in NZ. About ten years ago (in a moment of madness) I thought about returning to the UK (I am in Oz) and inquired about shipping my RG500. It was prohibitively expensive - and then there's the paperwork, additional hidden fees and charges etc.

I don't know what you do for a living Jon, but you might want to consider Oz. There is a chronic shortage of skilled tradespeople here and if you have a trade (especially in construction, mining or engineering) you can earn big dollars and I doubt you will have a problem getting permanent residency. Doctors, teachers, nurses etc ditto - although I don't know how their pay rates compare.

Plus the weather is fantastic (usually) and once you are out of the big towns and cities you can hoon around on your bike without much danger of getting a ticket.

Something to think about...
