Got me a 2009 Street Triple R. Absolutely love the bike. My question is the gearing seems very low. Revs 4000 rpm @ 50mph. 16/47 sprockets. Has anyone ever put a 18 T on the front or a smaller rear sprocket? The power is huge and why rev the piss out of the engine on the highway.
Are you saying that 4000 rpm is high for 50 mph? I don't think this motor is meant to be lugged like that. Redline is at 12,500. Maybe you are used to twins or singles, but 4000 rpm is very low for this motor. Spend some more time with it, you will get used to it. If you really want higher gearing, I wouldn't go 18 on the front that is overkill. I have heard of some people using a 17 front, but most go the other way and gear it down. 16/49 is a popular setup.
I agree with previous replies. I came from a Honda CBR1100XX which turned about 4500 RPM at 70 MPH in top gear. I also had an SV650 that was always hitting the rev limiter. I got used the Striple's higher RPM, and now have a 49T rear sprocket. This motor loves revs.
Do the 17T, if you want. Call it a cheap experiment. Maybe that other guy will sell you his. :grin2:
I have a 2014 Street Triple, and in 6th gear, every 1000 rpm translate in approximately 12 mph. In other words, at 5000 rpm, my speed is around 60 mph. I completely agree with every other poster, the engine just starts to open up above 6000, I see no benefit of gearing it taller.
