I have read that synthetic is not the best until the 800K oil change. I have just over 50 KM and would like to do a few oil/filter changes myself before then...
The oil to use for break in is the one that comes pre-filled in the bike. There is zero need for an oil change before the first service, although plenty of people will tell you different for all kinds of fascinating reasons. Someone else will probably be able to tell you on the K&N filter, I have never felt the need to use anything different than the OEM Castrol/Triumph one and my bike runs picture perfect.
It seems many people default to the K&N because of the nut on top, but my understanding is that it's a pretty mediocre filter. If you get yourself one of these
Little trick for the standard oil filter to make any change easy and trouble free without needing a spanner: Wind it on hand tight, then wrap an old leather belt around it and give it another 1/8 turn. Bam you got no more than 12 NM. So far never have had a leak.
I just read an article in one of the track magazines that they've been banned from the MotoAmerica series. Apparently they moved manufacturing overseas, and ever since have seen repeated failures, leaks, etc. I haven't had an issue yet, but will definitely be keeping a closer eye on it and won't be repurchasing one with the next oil change.
I always felt dubious about K&N, no matter where they are made. For me higher flow (their eternal claim) = less filtration. What I saw from their air filters on adventure bikes hasnt exactly filled me with enthusiasm.
I just use OEM filters. If a filter gets stuck, I punch a screw driver an inch out from the end and use the extra leverage to remove it. I always hand tighten the filter.
I was going to mention that I only use the OEM filter, but was afraid of getting flamed. I don't necessarily think it's better than any other, but I sort of like hanging around in the store where I buy them. I also think it's a small way to give them some business. I get my oil there, too.
I've been using the Purolator Pure One filter (yellow, don't have P/N here at work). Great filtering, textured, no problems. Even done several track days on them. Plus, the same filter fits my Honda CBR1100XX and my wife's Nissan Altima. I have also used Mobil 1 filters (M1-108) with good luck.
If you have a NAPA close by, you can go with their store brand. NAPA branded filters are made by Wix, and Wix are decent filters. I checked for a number, but neither NAPA nor Wix list one specifically for the Street Triple. However, for the 2012 Daytona 675 the NAPA filter number is 1358 and the Wix filter is 51358.
I also wouldn't mind doing an afternoon trip to the dealer sometime to see what new bikes they have in the showroom. If Triumph releases a new 2017 ST3, then I'll be sure there this fall to test ride.
I've read that you shouldn't use the PureOne. It doesn't flow enough oil fast enough for a motorcycle so it basically opens its bypass valve partially all the time. It is an excellent filter in that it filters smaller particles then just about anything else out there just not appropriate for motorcycles. I think there is info regarding it on the CalSci oil site that's pretty epic in detail and information.
