Tire Pressure

Early on I looked at the chassis label and set the pressure at the recommended, 36F - 42R. At my 600 mile recently I mentioned my perception that those numbers seemed really high and the service guy responded that it was for 2 up riding and they suggested around 32F - 36R, which is about what my old SV650S ran. So what's right, I reread the manual and the Daytona has the lower pressures, but not the Streple. The bike is definitely does not seem as easy on the turn in now, not hard, but not as "think it, it does it" as it had with the higher pressures. I don't ride a bike hard anymore so I'd like to hear opinions of those of you that still "push the limits".

I must admit I thought the tyre pressures seemed really high as well, after all it's virtually a naked Daytona, same wheels etc, so why should the pressures be so much higher? I allways ran my sportsbike tyres at 32/36 so run the street at the same, just because it's an upright riding position doesn't mean i ride it any different to my gixer.

It depends on a lot of things. The tires themselves may be designed for higher pressures. They won't stick worse necessarily with higher pressures, but they will likely last longer. I used to get close to 15K miles out of a set of Diablos on my TT600 in regular commuting duty. I ran fairly high pressures, but I don't remember what they were- 36/41 as I recall. Other tires with stiffer sidewalls, like Dunlops, use lower pressures. If you use pressures too low, handling will suffer. ST3s are not full on race reps, so the tire pressure recommendations are probably more for touring type riding or commuting as opposed to scratching. When in doubt, I would go with whatever the tire manufacturers recommend, and it is usually around 40 rear, mid 30s front.

If you take it to the track, all bets are off. Talk to the tire manufacturer's rep at the track if there is one. Otherwise talk to other riders and filter everything they say.

The shop guys recommended 33/36 front to rear on my Street Triple for one up. Seems to handle just fine. I'm curious as to how well the Dunlops will hold up. First time I've run with Dunlop tires.
