The All-Inclusive Street Triple vs Speed Triple Thread

I'm in the market for one of these bikes. It will be my first street bike, and I'm debating whether or not to go with the detuned version of the 1050.

My question is this: Why did you choose the 675 over the 1050? Are the bikes nearly identical aside from the power plant?

Na, huge difference. The bikes are completely different sizes and weights.

The Street triple is the naked 675, with a few of the expensive bits taken off, and not as much power.

Hopefully someone will correct me if i have just made a CK of myself....

To expand upon those thoughts a bit...

Styling is the main thing the Street has in common with the Speed--and even that's not very applicable beginning with the 2008 model of the S3. They are basically two different tools for two different jobs.

The Street uses a variant of the Daytona 675 engine, as Adam said, not the 1050. This version has less horsepower than the Daytona version, but spreads out the usable torque over a wider range of RPM. The Street is a much lighter bike than the Speed, however, and therefore makes good use of the available output. It's quick and nimble, and tons of fun on the (ahem) street.

The Speed, however, has the advantage of making more HP and torque in total, and it doesn't have to be revved as high to give satisfying amounts of both. Though it is heavier, the sheer oomph makes it the better choice for hooligan activities and perhaps long-haul riding as well.

I've had both, but didn't pick the Street over the Speed. I'd rather have had both, because they are so different and so great in their own way, but some other things intervened last summer (such as the MG Midget you may have noticed in one of my photos). So, because I've been longing for a lighter bike for some time, I went with the one that met that need and yet still has a lot of what I liked about Speedy, too.

HOTR Man, at the risk of reading spoiled, snobbish or even haughty, I could afford either or both. I wanted a second bike, the first one being my Oct. '04 Rocket III.

The reason I eventually picked the Street and NOT the Speed after having copiously test-ridden both?

The answer is a simple three-letters word and that word happens to be FUN. Triumphant FUN. :

Speaking as a lady who had her heart set on a Speed Triple for years, having then tried the Street, I went fo the latter because it was lighter and more manoeverable. Not that I couldn't handle the 1050cc when on the move, but manhandling the bike, parking etc is so much easier with the Street. And it DOES handle like a dream.I had a Fazer 600 before, which in comparison was like a treetrunk-stiff and heavy! Ideal world, money no object, I'd have both the Speed and the Street.

The best way to found out what you prefer is to try both bike back to back. That is what I did and I picked the Street.

Weight and seat height were factors and so was cost but the truth is that I had more fun riding the Street because I was able to use the available power with the lighter and in my opinion more agile bike. I was never faster on the Speed than on the Street except (perhaps) a brief squirt along a major road where the Speed's power may have had a small advantage.

I don't think it reads that way; in fact, I think it's useful to hear the reasoning behind someone's purchase, when price is not the defining criterion.

That said, if YOU'RE feeling that way, a traditional remedy would be to make an unsolicited, anonymous gift.

I think the 2008 Blazing Orange Speed Triple is awesome.

I am still finishing up my last year at University. I'll be purchasing a bike in the coming year with what money I can muster. Another reason the Striple is a more attractive option.

I could have either the Speed, or Street but have chosen the 675 due to weight, seat height and riding position. Makes for a much more manageable package in town and on the back roads. I own a large Italian touring bike so a modern day roadster was in the cards for me. The Street Triple fits the bill nicely. With the tank and tail bag You can even do a solo weekend with it.
