It all depends on where you live. Here in Oregon, in the good ol' US of A, you are required to have both left and right. Where they are does not matter, just that you have a left and a right. Check your local law book.

here in cali we have to have both and they have to be a certain size as well. not sure on the actual specs though. i have a friend of a friend that just got a ticket--many tickets in fact, the cop wrote him up a ticket for every individual modification he had to his bike (exhaust, mirrors, windscreen and a couple more ive forgetten). they arent exactly easy going out here with that kind of stuff.

not sure who you'd contact out there about it. here in the u.s we have the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). thats who i would contact to ask about things like that.

Why bother with the legal requirements?

People use undersized number plates all the time and risk a £30 fine and an order to replace it with a legal one.

Take them off but keep them if you believe that you do not need them and if you get nicked put them back on. If you do get stopped by the fuzz you can always figure a good excuse like they kept working themselves loose so you are replacing them and the new ones have not arrived but you thought it was dangerous riding with something that might fall off!

The second hand Speed Triple 1050 I demoed really wound me up because the right hand mirror was flapping around like a seagull's wing on a blustery day....

My advice would be not to remove them because the roads in the UK are full of numpties BUTthere are some nice bar end mounted options that are worth looking at.
