Newbie - Introduction and Question

Hi All.
I'm an experienced biker (expat Brit woman now resident in the Netherlands). My current commuter bike is a Suzuki Bandit 650. I have other bikes too but am considering exchanging the Bandit next spring. I've noticed the bike press praising the Street Triple, and so yesterday I actually got to ride one. My local Triumph dealer let me loose on one for half an hour. I was really impressed with it especially when I compared it to my Bandit. The Bandit feels old in comparison. I love the Triumphs engine, the sound is wonderful, it felt much faster and lighter than my Bandit.
So my question to you guys and gals who have one of these bikes is, are there any issues, snags or problems with the Triumph.
Secondly by the looks of it supply seems to be short so should I be ordering now.
Thanks very much for the info

Way too early to tell about "issues" yet, as only a few people have received their bikes to date. We're all pretty much expecting to watch our oil levels closely, based on the experience of Daytona 675 owners, but the expectation is that the lower piston speeds in this version of the engine will make it less inclined to use oil. Other than that, no one has any idea whether any of the parts will have a proclivity to fall off or anything yet.

As for when to order one...apparently the right time to do that was two and a half months ago if you want one any time soon. However, delivery of bikes ordered now is expected in Spring, so that's a nicer time to be running one in.

Thanks Diego. Thought everyone was ignoring me.
I loved the bike and will probably take the plunge Jan/Feb.

The Bandit has been a good bike, but is lacking charisma. Whereas the Triumph has loads of it.

If anyone else has any comments, would love to hear them.

Thanks

Not ignoring- just asleep! I have had my Daytona 675 since March 2006, so getting on toward two years. It has been crashed once on the track, and generally ridden fairly hard. It has an oil drip I just noticed, but I am beginning to thing the leak is from the stator cover. It slid a long way on the left side, and the protective cover over the stator cover ground through. It has had no oil consumption issues at all, nor has it had any other Triumph related issues.

The only problem I have had with it that can be laid at Triumph's feet is maintaining appropriate behavior while riding it. I had an issue with Michelin tires going off- they were a major contributor to my crash. A friend has 17,000 miles on his 675, and another friend has far fewer miles but has crashed his something like four times now.

The oil consumption variation has a lot to do with the extreme piston speeds a Daytona 675 generates at high RPMs. The same motor, using less revs, will be less variable from individual to individual. Also, Triumph has had two years of production to get the tolerances just right, so I wouldn't worry at all about oil consumption in considering a Street Triple.

I can't think of any other typical issues. The steering stop breaks off in a crash, but it can be repaired as long as the insurance company doesn't find out about it. I doubt Street Triples will be ridding quite as hard as a general rule, and if you don't drop your bike, it won't be an issue anyway. The aftermarket if finally beginning to notice Triumphs, especially the 675 versions, in a way they never did before.

So, while I can't tell you what life would be like with a Street Triple, I hope this gives you a bit more information than you already had.

Thumbs up

My metallic grey Daytona has been totally devoid of problems. And it was extremely frugal oil-wise. Perhaps the result of my time-tested, patient and gradual run-in process. Anyway, the Street will be my fourth Triumph in recent years (I am keeping my Oct. '04 Rocket III). So, obviously, Triumph has satisfied my soul (smile) . Jamie
