Anyone know if the long term application of these sliders will damage the paint on the tank? I searched the net and a few other forums about the long term effects but can't seem to find any thing other than people hating on them. Kinda nervous 'gluing' them to my tank.
What I heard from a race team tech was that I should think about them as permanent additions to the tank. IOW, good luck getting them off without harming the paint. That being said, if you're looking for just tip-over protection or aesthetics, then just use some light-duty adhesive tape rated for outdoors. Remove without trouble using mineral spirits. I put mine on with very strong adhesive tape, activated with mineral spirits. Still will be very hard to get off, but I figure I stand more of a chance than if I'd have used the aquarium cement supplied with the sliders. Like BKK said, I have no plans to take them off.
Ah so seems they are permanent, I was mostly just curious about it. I did get them for low speed/tipover protection. They seem to be hit or miss at high speeds from what I've seen around the interwebz. But hey, I figure some protection that may help is better than none. These and the tech specs covering that sweet graphite paint is gonna bother me for a bit lol
My buddies had R&G tanks sliders on there zx6rs and they did absolutely nothing for there tank in an accident. It still dented the tank in from where the tank sliders hit. It is mainly for cosmetic use
I do not that think that is quite correct. My understanding is that their primary duty is to prevent the tank from rupturing and spilling gas in a prolonged slide(s). The carbon fiber sliders wear much better than metal and will take multiple slides vs. just the metal tank corner (that's what the race team tech told me). I think they would also improve the likelihood that a tip-over/low-side does not result in a dented tank as they disperse the impact over a large area of tank, but that I don't know.
They don't prevent tank damage anymore than a back protector prevents back damage, but it reduces the amount of damage or its likelihood.
Lx22, if you have frame sliders (like the Triumph ones) then I think your tank will be okay in just a tipover. I've read about a few ST3 tipovers with frame sliders on this forum and none mentioned tank damage. If you want them anyway, then go to a hardware store and get light or medium duty double-sided adhesive to hang the sliders. Do NOT activate them with mineral spirits as that will make them stick much more aggressively. Then you can remove them with mineral spirits. I think the sliders look good in any case but perhaps I have no taste.
