Has anyone had this problem before (Battery or R/R problem) ?

hey guys,

i have a 2010 STR which i have had for about 6 months... anyways i let my brother borrow my bike about 4 weeks ago, when he pulled up to put it into the garage he dropped the bike and broke the right indicator, (i think this may have something to do with the problem).

last week i went to go fora ride and i had NO power what so ever. a quick test with a multimeter and it was showing 6.somthing volts.

tried to clutch start did nothing, then we decided to jump start it. it worked like a beauty, started the way it normally did let the bike warmup for a minute or two, then disconnected the jumper leads off the car and the bike stalled. Tried again and again and the bitch would not keep running without the jumper leads connected.

I borrowed a trickle charger off my mate and charged the battery over 24hrs and tonight i connected it again and hey presto it starts like a beauty. i dont have a multimeter to check the volts of the battery to see if the alternator is working but i let the bike run for over an hour, didnt really have the balls to take it for a spin incase it died on me again.

My questions are:

1. Could the drop shorted something out and drained the battery?

2. Is the R/R playing up?

3. Is the battery on its way out?

4. Could this be a act of my fiance telling me to sell the bike (hahahahah)
5. Have any ideas?

thanks

alec

For everything to do with Triumph charging systems you need to go here: Charging System Diagnostics: http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-trip...r-upgrade.html

The recall is on all Street Triple, Street Triple R and Daytona 675 models built between 2005 to 2009. The OP's bike is a 2010. That said, still worth checking his VIN with the dealer.

Here is the UK recall notice: http://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial.../#.UI07kLHMilo

Mine is a 2010, and my vin was within the range.

All with the old style are covered regardless of the verbage the vin # search is correct, even my late production 2010 was covered. I was making the suggestion based from actual experience.

Without a meter you won't be able to troubleshoot or test your charging system. Letting the motor idle for an hour is not a good idea and certainly won't charge your battery since max output is at 5Krpm. Numbers 1-4 are all possibilities. Your battery issue may be a coincidence or possibly #1 is at play. Or course, perhaps your brother left the ignition on or did something else to drain your battery.

My R/R went on my 2010 street about 2 years ago. The dealer replaced under warranty. This was before any recall was even issued. They have been a problem for a while.

In 2010 the replacement might still have been the older SCR R/R and not the later MOSFET unit. Worth checking. Indeed, you may find that your bike is still under recall!
