Electric problems POST R/R fix

Hi Guys

I registered last week and was about to post concerning my electical problems, but found a few threads from people with almost identical problems; bike cut out, wouldn't restart, no electrics, battery was completely fried etc...

i'd only had the bike for a few days (2010 Street Triple R) so the dealer collected it, took it away, fixed it and returned it on wednesday. however, since then i haven't ridden it because of knee surgery i had on thursday so i'm out of commission for a month or so. i just went out to the garage to start it up to check everything was ok and to give the engine a bit of a run and i noticed the dipped headlights aren't coming on. rears are fine, indicators are fine, and full beam are fine, as are all other electrics, just the lights aren't coming on with the ignition like they should.

not had a chance to contact the dealer concerning this yet as its sunday, and my technical experience of motorbikes is currently around the 2 week mark, but is there any logic to the idea that the dipped lights, being in use when the problem struck, have been blown, and simply need replacing? the fact the full beams still work tell me nothings been disconnected or broken.

as i say, aside from these specific lights, everything else about the bike seems to running as normal.

cheers

Mike

Sounds like the headlight switch on the handlebar is faulty. You should be able to switch between high and low (dipped) beams. Take it off and it will open up so you can see the connections. Clean the connections with electrical cleaner and make sure nothing came unplugged.

Also, try turning the ignition switch all the way over to the left into the steering lock area and select the parking lamps which is just after the steering lock. This will turn on the low beams and tail light.

No, it doesn't turn on the low beams. It turns on those little lights in the headlight assemblies. Some sort of parking feature.

That's right - thanks for the correction. I though those came on with the low beams...

If your bike was overcharging it's possible that it blew both low beam filaments. It's rare but possible. I agree that the headlight switch is a potential suspect as well though.

all fixed. it was just the low beam filament after all. dealer sent 3 new bulbs out (one spare, which was nice) and i just fitted them and everything's working perfectly. everything except the weird little parking lights within the housing, one of which looks heavily charred, but i never plan on using them so i probably won't even bother replacing them!

yeah, as you can see that was the consensus going into the problem, seems to be quite a unique occurrence

When your low beams blew, they got hot. Its that heat that probably fried the little bulbs.
