Is this a good deal?

Local seller has 2009 Street Triple R with 600 miles for $7500. Looks like the stock bike except that he has added a full set of GB Racing case guards and frame sliders.

If it runs good and is in good appearance, I'd say jump all over it.

Haven't been to see it yet, but here is what the owner said to my inquiry about whether the bike had any damage:
"had a low speed drop in an intersection hit some oil or something. My knee took the worst of it. But the brake handle and right rear passenger peg have a scrape on them. No chrome or paint damaged."
My thought is still a good deal if that's really all that's wrong with it, but is there a risk there is hidden damage? Anything I can do to be sure?

There's not really a lot you can do to be sure about hidden damage, but the good news is: if the seller described the accident accurately, there's almost no way that there could be hidden damage!

These are very tough little bikes, and the damage described matches exactly what I'd expect from such an incident as that. The handle and pegs take most of the impact in that situation, and the handle itself should break before there's likely to be any damage to the master cylinder. So, I'd be pretty comfortable with a Striple that's been through no worse than that.

One thing I might be inclined to ask, if I were the buyer, is how long the bike was on its side. This engine is not considered to be especially prone to oil leaking into unwanted places when the bike is down, but still, one might have more confidence in its longevity if he knew the bike had been righted immediately after the mishap.

Probably worth checking under the GB Racing engine guards to see if they got scraped as well, or at least ask him if he fitted them before or after the accident.

I passed on it

The seller seemed like a nice guy, but there were a few things that indicated that the damage was more extensive than originally indicated, and he wasn't willing to let me take it into a mechanic to get it checked out. It may be a great deal for someone, but to me the peace of mind is worth paying a bit more to buy it new (or waiting for another used one that hasn't been down). I'm in no hurry to buy.

Thanks to all who responded to the thread.

That's a huge alarm, runaway! I would not buy any used vehicle without haing it checked out by someone knowledgeable.

What is considered a long time on its side?
What should I look for?
Anything I should do?

After hitting a deer 2 weeks ago, mine was on its side about 5 minutes. It was not running, and I had shut off the ignition. I couldn't lift it due to a shoulder injury, but 2 very nice Harley riders righted it (Blue Ridge Parkway on September weekday, bikes outnumber cars. Too bad deer outnumber bikes! )

I thought my STripleR survived the crash well, rode it directly home 1,300 kms over 2 days.

Greg.
