You guys should've warned me. LOL.

I replaced my alternator cover today. The bike had been knocked over while parked. Everything went real well (the Triumph shop manual is great). You have to fight the magnets a bit when you remove the cover and I was fully prepared for the opposite when I put it back together.

Surprise! The cover quite literally jumped out of my hands and went right into position on the engine. It was perfect. I buttoned it up, started the bike, and everything is as it should be.

BTW, there were some metal bits broken off the inside of the cover. Damage could have been done had I not replaced it.

A haunted bike! Aughhhhh!

(You'd think with all the new smilies, there's be one running around in terror. )

But seriously, congratulations, and thanks for letting us know what the task is like.

One other thing of note. Triumph wants you to discard the six bolts that hold the stator, crank sensor, and wire clamp in place (on the inside). I'm pretty sure its because of the thread-locker (loctite) that was used when it was put together. New bolts are probably pre-treated. The torque settings are real low (6 and 12 nm). I cleaned up the threads real well (wire wheel attachment on a bench grinder), cleaned them with isoproyl alcohol, and put blue loctite on them. Hopefully, that will suffice.

I'd pull the cover back off in a few hundred miles and double check them. The encapsulated bolts have a really thick locktite on them that's hard to compare to the liquid forms. If you have a good gooey blue then it should be fine. The only reason I mention this is that I have seen really runny blue that didn't hold well with any amount of engine heat.

I used the same stuff (from the same tube) on the cover bolts. I'll just check one of those (lots less work).

Some research on the blue stuff leads me to believe its good for 150°C (300°F). Letting it cure for a full 24 hours may be critical, too.
