Gear Indicator

Tiger rider sneeking in here for a quick question.

A friend has a Street 3 and told me he was begining to experience erratic read outs from his gear indicator. I had no idea one was fitted incorporated with the instrument console, wish the Tiger had

Now I assumed that it would function in the same way that all the aftermarket ones that I know of do i.e. the revs are mapped to a speed range read from either a digital speedo or from a pick up on one of the wheels.

After doing a couple tests he reported back that it actualy changes with the bike stationary and even with the clutch disengaged.

Now I am pretty sure it is not some 'counting' device on the change shaft otherwise it would get totally lost the first time you found a false neutral, so I am now thinking there must be some switch gear internal to the gearbox.

Can anyone verify how the position signal is achieved?

I also was curious if there was some way this could be achieved on the 1050 but seeing another post stating that the Speed 3 doesn't have it I am also guessing that it's a peculiarity of the 675 engine / box.

Cheers
Niall

Your logic is impeccable. It is indeed a switch arrangement within the gearbox.

The 675 gearbox was designed to incorporate it, and so was the instrument cluster.

With the 1050s receiving new instruments in... what, the 2008 or 2009 model year?... I thought maybe the newest ones of those might also incorporate a gear indicator, but I guess not. It would be very hard to retrofit one, I suspect, because of what would have to be done inside the transmission.

Thanks, without looking at parts fiches I think it's probably not practicably achievable as you have alluded to. Pity, I do like elegant solutions.

Time to get that Acumen that's been lurking on the garage shelf down and get around to fitting it and tell my Street3 friend it might not be a cheap fix for his bike.

You should tell your friend to inform the dealer of this problem. I know of a few people who have had the same problem, which requires a replacement part.

Thanks for that, he should still be in warranty but I'll warn him.:
