First Service/break-in oil

Dealer Recommends First Service At 500 Miles, Im At 1000 And Money Is Really Tight. Is It Really Important To Get The First Service At 500 Miles? Is The Oil Break-in Oil Or Is It Just Regular Oil And Can I Go A Little Bit Longer.

YES!!! There's a special breakin only oil in the motor right now to help things wear in correctly. After that 500 miles it needs to get OUT and be running on synthetic.

You frist service will be under $200.

Stop driving it until you can get it done.

You need to get that oil out! A lot of guy's change their dino oil & filter at 500km's and replace it with more dino oil for another few hundred K's just to ensure the ring's bed in properly, then change to full synthetic, but you need to get that old oil & filter out now due to normal contamanents that arise from a new engine bedding in.

Well the most critical thing in the first service is the oil change. Changing the oil and the filter is a pretty easy process and in my opinion there is not really a good reason to bring it into a dealer for that. just do it yourself. The other things that the dealer will check are pretty much the same things that are covered in the maintenance section of the manual. You will find out how much different the break in oil is from a synthetic oil when you put it in and fire it up. Its like a new bike.

In my opinion, the most critical thing at first service, if done by the book, is to give the bike a complete going over, i.e. all the important fasteners, chain slack, ECU readout for errors, brake and clutch adjustments. These types of things CAN result in a life-threatening results, how would you like an axle nut to spin off while going 70 mph, lol?
I realize there might be some dealers who don't do it by the book, but the good ones will. My dealer had me come in at 800 miles, btw, before the first oil change.

Pay?

Not sure about the US but in the UK first service is labour free - or should be. All you pay for is the oil and filter so same cost as DIY!

Not that way in the US, alas. Only a few upscale brands of vehicles do that here.

Thanks for that AndyBra, I was allways under the assumption that the first service was labour free also, that was until my dealer wants me to cough up £110 for the first service, now I dont know if I'm being ripped off or if they can charge so I'm phoning Triumph to find out for def tomorrow.

I have just bought a Speed Triple from A1 Moto in York - asked the question re 1st service - said it would be about £70.00 (my Bandit only cost £37 via the local Suzuki dealership) - so I think they are putting a labour charge in there as well.

It's important to drop that oil. An oil change (DIY) can cost you as little as $25 if money is tight: Shell Rotella Synthetic T is like $20 (whole gallon) and Supertech ST7317 filter is $2 at walmart. Not what I would recommend or use for my bike, but if you must until you take your bike to your local dealer .. hey it's better than no oil change.
