New or used?

I've had my eye on switching to a St3. I had planned on getting an R, but I've recently come across a used standard in black, with 16 thousand kms. Canadian price for a new R is 10 500 and this used ride is going for 8 thousand.

I'd rather go new but the difference in money is fairly large and I'm not a big dude, so the upgraded suspension probably isn't a big problem. I do like the matte grey colour and 16 thousand kms seems a little high. Makes me think it was rode hard for a year then traded off.

Thoughts?

Unless I knew the prior owner, and was confident it was taken care of, I would spend the extra $$ for new.

Also, the price of the used one may be negotiable......

I agree. Considering that at my dealer a new 2009 black street triple is $9,699 (Canadian) I think $8,000 is too much for a bike with 16,000 kms. See if they'll drop the price.

Also, if you use blue book (http://www.cbbtrader.com/values_trade-in.php?pid=383225) says the trade-in value at the dealer for a 2009 Street Triple is $6,200. The reason I mention this at my dealer uses a similar amortization system as Blue Book in determining its trade in values.

The blue book also says that a 2008 Street Triple has a range of values of $7,200 to $8,000 Canadian for what its worth. But this is for a bike in immaculate condition.

Hopefully that helps some or lends some perspective. Personally, I'd pay a little extra for the certainty.

Agreed!

That's exactly what I did!

There was a used Street Triple in Fusion White w/flyscreen and visor, and bellypan for $6900 with over 6000 miles on it where I live and I opted for a brand new Triple R instead! I think the certainty of something new and knowing you had broken it in properly is important...

Not to mention the white triple was downed and repaird which goes to show you ... if someone doesn't want to tell you something, they don't have to and you might not never know it was downed (luckily the white triple owner did tell me, but it looked in perfect condition when I visited).

Thanks for the thoughts.

8 Gs does seem high, and the price is likely negotiable. I'm going to check it out regardless, because if it is immaculate then I'll be tempted.

I used your link wrkm and I might be able to get a three grand trade in for my current ride. With a negotiated price on the used Striple, plus the swap, I could be riding away from the shop with a Striple for around five grand. That's quite attractive, and I can always hammer it and then trade in for whatever incarnation the Striple will become in 2011.... or keep it if it's still functioning at 100%.

Have their been any problems with more higher mileage Striples? There should be bikes out there with 20 thousand kms or more by now.

Ideally, I'd go with a new R and avoid 16 thousand kilos worth of potential problems.

I managed to pick up a used 2008 Striple with 850km on it, so practically brand new. Mine came with solo cowl, belly pan, fly screen and visor, and also high mounted Arrow slip ons. I got all of this for $8,000 CDN. I consider this to be pretty lucky, so I would say, if you want the used bike, negotiate for a lower price.

Good choice of bike btw, you can't go wrong really.

Best of luck.

Okay, so I went and took a look at the used Striple. It's in very good shape. New rubber, chain, very clean. Some very light marks on the tank but otherwise in professionally polished condition. The dealer is very reputable.

I may offer them eight grand out thee door. The kms are more than I'd like to see but the bike appears mint.

On the other hand... The 09 R is sitting there calling my name.

Dealer won't consider my current ride for a trade-in, so I'd best see what I can get for it before thinking anymore.

What kind of higher mileage Striples are out there?
