I use much the same technique as Ken, except I don't trust the peg mounts to be strong enough. I find a suitable place on the frame or even the swingarm, as the mood strikes me. (If I'll be taking rough roads, I also use a broad strap and padding to link the seat and the rear wheel. I don't compress the rear shock, but do limit the range of travel that way.) The 2X4s are screwed in place, and I have marked where they need to be for the Street Triple, the Bonneville, and the Tiger. With a cordless drill and screwdriver bits, I can reconfigure the trailer for any of the bikes in a matter of minutes.
Up front, my tie-down points weren't conveniently located for the Street, but eventually I switched to using some nylon strap gadgets called Canyon Dancers to give me a scuff-free way of securing the front.
