Tying Down a Street Triple

I am taking the Street Triple to Deals Gap soon and wanted to know where the best place to tie down the rear of the bike to the trailer. Are the passenger foot peg mounts sturdy enough? They seem to give a bit when winched down.

If the bike is facing forward, the rear tie-downs should not be too tight. Just barely compress the rear. The front tie-downs do all the real work, the rear ones just stop the back of the bike from moving around over bumps.

I was told the above from experienced bike haulers, and then I tested it over 12,000 kms. Mostly an SV650S (very similar in size to STriple), but also VStrom, TL1000S, ZX6R and KLR650.

If the front is secure, you don't need to compress the rear, just keep it from "walking" around. The rear foot peg brackets should work just fine, make sure none of your tie downs rub the paintwork or frame.

I used a trailer with a wooden bed. Screwed some 2x4's into the bed as wheel chocks. Then strapped front using the handlebar risers for each side. Then passenger foot peg brackets each side for rear.

I use much the same technique as Ken, except I don't trust the peg mounts to be strong enough. I find a suitable place on the frame or even the swingarm, as the mood strikes me. (If I'll be taking rough roads, I also use a broad strap and padding to link the seat and the rear wheel. I don't compress the rear shock, but do limit the range of travel that way.) The 2X4s are screwed in place, and I have marked where they need to be for the Street Triple, the Bonneville, and the Tiger. With a cordless drill and screwdriver bits, I can reconfigure the trailer for any of the bikes in a matter of minutes.

Up front, my tie-down points weren't conveniently located for the Street, but eventually I switched to using some nylon strap gadgets called Canyon Dancers to give me a scuff-free way of securing the front.

I use the Canyon Dancer strap as well. For those that use it, don't try to compress the forks too much or you risk bending the handlebar. I will be trailering my steed up to the dealer next Thursday (all the parts have finally made it in from the accident I had in April) and I'll try to get some photos of the bike tied down.

I've tried using a canyon dancer, but don't like the way it seems to stress the throttle and grips...maybe I was just using it incorrectly

Oh, to keep with the thread...on the rear, I strap to subframe (I have lowboy and removed pillion pegs).

I use Cycle Cynch not canyon dancers they do not screw up your grips as they pull straight down with no side force, trailerd my track Daytona many hundreds of miles with no problems and yes lightly tie down the rear to stop it jumping around the passenger pegs will hold fine.

Ride it. Saves the trouble of how to tie it down in the trailer and more fun to boot!
