Clutch Cover Gasket Leak '01 ST 955

Was out for a ride this last Sunday, and noticed a puddle of oil under my bike when I stopped on the way home. Got the bike home, oil level looked normal, pulled the fairings off and cleaned all the oil off the engine. Let it run for a few minutes while on the center stand and could not find the leak.

Rode it to work the next day and the belly pan was covered in oil again. Turned out it was just the clutch cover gasket ($15 at the local dealer). Just wanted to share some pics of what a mess it makes. Have just over 33k miles on the bike. Seems a little early to be having this kind of failure.

Funny same thing happened on my RS 2000. Owned it for a couple weeks and noticed oil coming from all around that gasket. Was a pain to clean both sides perfectly before putting on the new gasket.
Always use something like 1194 liquid gasket. You'll be happy you did.

Regards,

Stan

We have a difference of opinion here. I strongly advise against using gasket sealants.

Yes! These arent old Chevy 350's where you gooped everything up then slapped it together. Proper torquing pattern and a properly fit gasket should seal it up withouth the goop......

Torquing pattern: Start in the middle and work your way our clockwise in a spiral. That always works for me. Some do a criss cross x pattern as well.

The stuff I recommended is thin and my local Triumph dealer
said to use it. I learn first hand, the first gasket I replaced started to leak again and I had to buy another. After using the 1194 threebond it's dry as can be. No more leaks. I did the proper pattern and torque the first time also. I've worked on every bike I've owned and am a certified Aircraft Mechanic, I know it's not a Chevy small block.

Whoopie! I have an A&P ticket also, with a few pluses to add to that. So what?

Use what you want, but don't get offended when you opine and others do not agree. After all, it is a forum made up of opinions, and I did say we have a difference. I certainly did not expect to change your mind.

BTW, if the first cover leaked, the proper procedure would have been to true the mating surface. Maybe your difficulty cleaning the old gasket material off was due to a previous install with sealer because of a warped cover.

But, your bike, so do as you please.

And, although it was not my post, even I could figure out that the 350 mention was just rhetorical.

Wow, I never expected so much response to my thread.

I am not going to take any of your advice as I was lazy and dropped it off at the dealer .

I have no idea if they used any sealant or not, only time will tell if the gasket holds or not.

I'd be happy to get at least another 33k miles out of the new gasket.

Try not to be a smuck. I was trying to state that I do know what I'm doing (in this case) and would never treat any bike like a crappy old slapped together clunker. I was just stating my opinion also. I bet you got your ticket. What did you work for Eastern ? Probably live in South
Florida, now I get it. Take it light !
