New Sprint ST owner - Couple questions.. with pics.

Awesome forum. I am searching and trying to learn all I can about my new machine. Couple things I haven't found..

1. How much can the factory panniers hold weight-wise?

2. Besides the Corbin and making my own, does anyone produce a pillion backrest?

Enough with that.. some pictures..

I love it so far.. had it about week and put 400ish miles on it. It's an '00 955i. Perfect compliment to my motard. Anyway, looking forward to spending some more time around here. This is my 2nd Triumph, first was a '04 Daytona 600. Missed it, so I got this to tour on.

Thanks,

Dave

My manual states a maximum safe load of 6KG (13 lbs) per pannier.

I've never had a need for a backrest, so I don't know what is available, but I am sure others will let you know what they are using.

Anyway, congratulations again on the new bike, it looks great.

Welcome aboard

Hi and welcome to TriumphRat.net and the Sprint forum txsprint

That is a very nice and tidy '00 955 you have there Dave.

I can't help you with the back rest thing either, I know we have at least 2 or 3 threads about it though and at least one where a guy made his own.

Don and I ask all noobs to please take a little time to read our sticky for new members.

Enjoy the madness..................

TXRider,

I bought a '00 ST years back, and the previous owner had fabbed a nice backrest that mounted to the Triumph luggage rack. I sold it to GreenST (IIRC), who then had it on eBay again a year or so ago.

The alternative (and much better idea) is to put a topbox on the bike with a pillion pad.

I've loaded my bags to the gills. The racks don't care, but you can definitely feel the load back there.

That being said, if you plan on 'bagging' it, especially with a pillion, you are going to need a much stronger spring on the rear shock. They are undersprung when new, and that is for a single, economy-sized rider. Same goes for the fork springs.

I managed to upgrade cheaply. I found a spring on eBay that is rated at 1000lb/in, and had a local shop swap the springs. The stocker is approximately 750lb/in. It transformed the bike's handling, especially when I had the bags mounted.

HTH!

Thanks for the info guys, I'll start looking into top boxes. Preferably quickly removable ones.

pushrod, you from TT? Noticed you called me rider and I did post up over there about the bike.
