E85 in 2006 and Up Sprint ST

I just picked up the October issue of 'BIKE' magazine and they have an article about running E85 in the Triumph Daytona 675.

Unless I am imagining things, I could swear that my owners manual states that I can run E85 in my 2006 Sprint ST.

Have any of you tried to run E85 in your Sprint.

I live here in Little Rock and we have one station downtown that is currently selling E85 for around $3.10/gal.

I think the manual says you can run gas with up to 10% ethanol.

It does say that we can run up to 10% Ethanol on page 33. In the 'BIKE' article, the only modification that they did on the 675 was a power commander and I think a larger capacity fuel pump. The E85 was good for a 3 hp and 3ft/lb gain.

That's a bit of an over-simplification. With E85 you'll need to run a larger volume of fuel into the engine (25-35%, I don't know the exact # off hand). I know Bike said that on the 675 the injectors were at 100% duty cycle until they swapped out the fuel pump to increase the rail pressure.

You could make your Sprint run E85, but you'd probably need either new injectors or a fuel pump, or both, and you'd definitely need to change the mapping. To do that you'd need a dyno and a competent tuner. Then, if you wanted to switch back to gasoline, you'd have to re-map the engine back to that.

For what it's worth, flex-fuel cars, for example, have a sensor that detects the proportioning and adjusts the mapping accordingly. You could not achieve this effect on a bike without significant work.

How in the world can a four cycle engine run with injectors at 100% duty cycle?

Injector flow rates are calculated at static, and generally are never allowed over 80%.

Here is a link to a Speed Four Converted to run on E85. What is really cool is that you can run gas or E85. A true flex fuel I guess.

I don't have a copy of the mag so I can't quote it exactly, and I'm definitely working off memory here.

If injectors can run at 80% why can't they run at 100%?

I also believe they were going by what the power commander or whatever reported. I've read references of ECU's reporting duty cycles of 110%, for example, which are obviously physically impossible. The long and short of it, I suppose, is you could claim "the injectors were pushed to their absolute max", or near it, anyhow, for the case of the 675 Bike did.

I do have a copy of that mag. I'll try and dig it up and see what the article actually said.
