Hi everyone. As you have read I was in the market for a new windscreen for my 2001 Sprint ST and through the poll system here I decided to go with the Powerbronze Airflow. Here is a basic review of it and the process regarding it.
I ordered the screen via the web on a Sat. I paid $74 (US) plus $10(US) shipping. $84 total was a good price I feel. I promptly received an email saying, “we have received your order, not an acceptance of that order.” Which I thought strange, but figured maybe it’s a Brit thing? Lol As of a week or so later I had still not received any confirmation, shipping info...nothing. So I waited another few days and called. I spoke with a nice lady who confirmed my order and told me that they were to ship it to the US and that I would receive shipping information from their distributor here. That was not the case. I never heard another thing until about 2 weeks later, it arrived on my door via UPS.
The shipment was well backed and padded with brown butchers paper. No flaws or damage, and the workmanship was very nice. It even has a nice “Sprint” label in the darkened area of the screen, very stylish! (Note: the white areas in the tint are relections from the lights and flash.)
Installation was a snap and the only hold up on it was that I had never done one before and made a few small errors (there are long fairing/screen screws and short ones…and they do not swap places well). All the holes lined up nicely and within 30 min or so I had a spanking new windscreen. It also came with a rubber beading that would run along the top of the screen, which I chose not to install.
The screen is actually 5/8 of an inch shorter than the stock, but is bubbled outward so as to deflect the wind up and over the rider. I am tall, 6’3”, and while the stock screen directs the wind into my upper chest, I found that the PB caused it too hit just above my eyes. If I were 3 in shorter it would have cleared my head nicely. Even so I did find the ride to have MUCH less wind blast and only a small amount of turbulence added. This held true up to 110 mph which was as high a speed as I tested it. For those who like to tank lay, its AMAZINGLY quiet in that position with virtually no wind it seems. I rode it to work over the last week and found it a nice fit.
My wife is also tall, thin and at 5’10” when riding pillion, she is up there a bit. We took the bike out for a 20 mi or so spin last evening. As many people have said here everyone is built differently, and had different experiences and expectations. Unfortunately the positioning and size of our bodies did not mix well at all with the airflow created by the Airflow. For some reason there was a turbulence that was not comfortable for either of us. If we were shorter, wider, thinner, or…whatever it might not be the case, but for us. It just didn’t work.
Sooooo. The experiment, though a partial success, has come to a close. While the screen is very nice and well made and I am thinking would work well for many people, the stock screen is back on, and I have a 98-04 PB Airflow up for sale, only 350mi on it and in fantastic condition. I would love to get out of it what I am in it…but am open to offers…so pm me if you are interested and maybe we can work something out.
